Summer and winter were actually pretty easy on her. It was the change of seasons that always made Patricia’s knees ache.

“You need to shower now, Pattie, be good,” Marian coaxed, her tone gentle. “You’re not like everyone else. You need to take extra care.”

With both of them urging her, Patricia didn’t have much choice. She grabbed her loungewear and headed upstairs to shower.

Mr. Padilla was waiting by the bathroom door. “There’s a dinner tonight. I need you to come with me,” he reminded her.

Patricia blinked in surprise but didn’t ask any questions. She just nodded and headed in.

After her shower, she changed and put on some light makeup. She slung a black trench coat over her arm and went downstairs. Oliver was by the window, coffee in hand, talking on the phone. He looked calm, listening quietly while the other person spoke.

Finally, he said, “What can he really pull off? I’m already watching Riverdale. If it comes to that, let the rotten ones fall and don’t keep the fools around.”

“I’ve got this.”

The call probably wasn’t supposed to end that fast, but as Oliver turned, he caught Patricia’s reflection in the glass. He hurried to wrap up, saying he’d call back, and hung up.

“All done?” he asked her.

“Yeah.”

They got into the car. Patricia pulled a blanket over her knees. Aiden was driving, and Jackson lounged in the passenger seat, as usual, a lollipop in his mouth.

As soon as the car started moving, the privacy partition slowly went up.

Patricia’s voice was soft. “Who are we having dinner with?”

Oliver reached over and took her hand, rubbing it gently. “The CEO of Skyline Entertainment.”

“You know him?”

“Not really. But the host who interviewed me yesterday seems to know him pretty well. She offered to introduce us.”

Patricia went quiet. Pacific Capital didn’t do any business with Skyline Entertainment. So Oliver was meeting him—for her?
