At Cloud Peak Villa, Patricia had just finished taking off her makeup. She glanced at her phone, her movements unhurried as she wiped her hands with a tissue. Everything about her was calm and collected, so different from Nina’s earlier panic.

She shifted, leaning back against the marble bathroom counter, looking perfectly at ease. With one hand, she scrolled through her messages and typed: “Send Joseph to a psychiatric hospital.”

When Nina saw the message, her whole body went cold. Her hands shook so badly she almost dropped her phone.

Send Joseph to a psychiatric hospital? That was her brother. She couldn’t do that.

She quickly typed back, “Isn’t there another way?”

Patricia replied in seconds. “There is. Let him get rid of you instead.”

Then another message followed: “Ms. Miller, here’s some advice—say things for others, do things for yourself.”

Nina’s breath caught. She remembered the wild, manic look in Joseph’s eyes in the car. If there hadn’t been people nearby, she might not even be here right now.

Voices came from outside her hospital room. Nina put her phone away just as Zoey walked in with a doctor.

“You should stay in the hospital for a few days,” the doctor said, looking her over. “Your injuries are pretty serious.”

“Who did this to you? The person really didn’t hold back,” he added, glancing at Zoey out of habit.

The comment made Nina look at Zoey, searching her face for any hint of what she was thinking. Zoey’s body tensed for a moment before she managed to answer.

“Why don’t you go take care of your rounds? I want to talk to Nina alone,” Zoey said.

“Of course. Call me if you need anything,” the doctor replied, stepping out and closing the door behind him.

“Thank you,” Zoey called after him.
