Brandon spent three days straight glued to his case files. He barely came up for air. By the fourth night, he was at home, hunched over a mess of papers and scribbled notes, when he finally saw a glimmer of hope.
No matter how he looked at it, everything led back to the Martin family.
It was almost two in the morning when he grabbed his phone and called his coworker. She picked up before the first ring ended.
“What was that secret you mentioned about the Martin Group?” he asked.
She hesitated. “You mean the family drama?”
Brandon grunted.
She went on, “The Martin Group used to belong to Jason. After his accident, Emerson took over.”
“And back then, who was Sterling Corp’s finance manager?”
“Jason’s…” Her voice trailed off as the pieces clicked. “Wait, are you saying Emerson forced Sterling out to get rid of Jason’s old allies?”
Brandon’s voice was low. “Do you think that’s possible?”
“It’s possible, but we don’t have any proof. Guesswork won’t get us anywhere.”
“Still, if Sterling was really pushed that far, doesn’t that make his wife’s conflicting statements even more suspicious?”
Brandon set his phone on speaker and rubbed his temples. “First, we need to find her.”
“Alright. You should sleep. I’ll try to sort through this, but I need some rest too.”
“Don’t push yourself. We’ll figure this out, just take care of yourself—and watch out, okay?”
