Inside a lavish Toronto mansion, Ruby sat at the edge of her bed with her phone, her gaze fixed on her legs and her eyes burning with anger she couldn’t hide.
Toronto’s weather was nothing like back home. She’d been here almost a year now, and not a single day had passed without her blaming Patricia. She hated her—for making her end up like this.
“Mom, Dad would never treat us that way.” There had never been any rumors or other women all these years. How could he suddenly have a secret child now, just as he was about to retire?
“Haven’t you seen enough of these rich people’s scandals over the years? You know better than anyone how this works,” her mom replied flatly.
“People can change in an instant, Ruby. We can’t take any risks.”
Lately, Emerson had been acting weird around her. She couldn’t pinpoint what exactly was off, but something definitely was. They weren’t young anymore, but it wasn’t normal for them to go a whole week without being together. If anything, as they’d gotten older, they’d only grown closer and more in tune with each other. Their marriage had always been pretty solid.
But after she got back from Toronto, Emerson kept pushing her away. Excuse after excuse, always avoiding her.
After all these years together, Tina knew Emerson’s habits better than anyone. But this time, it was different. Seriously different.
She’d been busy leading the Skyline Entertainment deal and didn’t have time to dwell on it. But after today’s call, Tina felt a nervousness she couldn’t shake.
“Just come home first. As for the kid, once you’re back and settled, we’ll figure it out, okay?” Tina tried to sound reassuring, her patience wearing thin.
Ruby mumbled a reply and hung up.
Bring the kid back? She had zero intention of doing that. She didn’t even want to. But leaving the kid overseas… that could make them a pawn for someone else.
She tossed her phone aside and sat on her bed, scrolling through her photos. She picked a good one from the batch, gave it a quick edit, and posted it on Instagram.
Caption: “If I’m quiet, it’s because I’m busy finding myself.”
The photo showed her standing on a Toronto street with a Hermès bag in hand. The real point of the photo—she was standing.
Within seconds, the comments poured in from the city’s socialites.
