Jackson was in fine form, dripping with that signature Northern sarcasm. “I’ve been saying it for ages—you’re just hogging the spot, won’t let him move on. Maybe you don’t care, but the guy’s been suffering. At least Mr. Padilla’s finally not constipated anymore.”
“Aiden’s going to start swinging at you again,” Patricia said, half-exasperated, half-amused.
Everyone knew Jackson and Aiden were the fiercely loyal type—ready to throw down for their people. With Jackson mouthing off like this, it was a miracle they hadn’t started a fight already.
Truth was, Jackson had never thought much of Oliver. Bringing some guy home to play husband, and on top of that, still having to baby him every now and then? What was that about? Looking for a father figure or something?
When the car pulled up at the mall, Jackson was still muttering under his breath.
Patricia pulled the blanket off her lap and got out. Jackson was already by her side, offering his arm without missing a beat.
They headed toward the escalators together.
Patricia had the kind of looks that stopped people in their tracks. And Jackson, with his military background, had that rough-edged, protective vibe that was all the rage these days. As they walked by, people couldn’t help but think of those viral bodyguard and heiress stories that had been flooding their feeds.
Phones went up everywhere, people snapping pictures.
Jackson never cared about that. People had been trying to catch shots of their Miss for years, and how many of those pictures ever made it anywhere?
On the first floor, luxury shops lined the hall. Patricia glanced at the directory, then headed straight for the stores Ruby was known to love.
People’s preferences change, sure. But what if someone was always keeping tabs on what you liked? Live under someone’s watchful eyes long enough, and you’ll have no secrets left.
Just as Patricia was about to step inside, Ruby came out, completely disguised in a hat and mask.
They brushed past each other—Patricia looking casual and unbothered, Ruby’s eyes flashing with something dark and dangerous.
