You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 470

Ruby leaned back into the sofa, staring at Tina like she’d just been slapped with the world’s worst news. For a moment, she couldn’t even hide how stunned she felt.

Nobody really knows where their life is headed until the very end. That’s just how it is.

Tina knew that better than anyone right now.

She and Emerson had been married for thirty years. She’d seen all kinds of dirty tricks between couples in the business world—scheming, backstabbing, even stories about husbands and wives poisoning each other just for money. She always thought she and Emerson were different, that they’d never end up like that.

But now, looking back, it all seemed laughable. Her whole life felt like some kind of cruel joke.

She sat in the living room with her daughter, both of them lost in worry, while her husband was probably off somewhere being sweet with his mistress.

After a long silence, Ruby finally leaned forward and grabbed Tina’s hand, her face set and determined. “No matter what, we can’t let Dad have a kid with another woman. We can’t let him bring an illegitimate child into this family.”

In the apartment, Amber sat on the edge of the sofa, head down, nervously twisting her dress between her fingers. She looked so young and unsure of herself.

Her voice was soft and shaky when she finally looked up at Emerson, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “Have you thought about the baby? If we wait any longer, it’ll be too late to do anything.”

Emerson sat beside her, staring at her young face, his jaw clenched tight. He looked completely conflicted.

“Let’s wait a little longer,” he finally said.

Amber’s eyes went wide in shock, clearly not expecting that answer.

Wait? Wait for what, exactly?

Wait until it’s too late to end things?

“I don’t want to wait anymore. I’m still young, Emerson. I don’t want to live every day scared and anxious. If I have this baby, it’ll be an illegitimate child. I’ve already ruined someone’s family—how am I supposed to face the world after this?”
