You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 476

“Johns, can you get some breakfast ready for Roger?”

Johns gave a quick nod and headed out.

Patricia slid her fingers down Oliver’s arm until she found his hand, then gently pulled him upstairs with her.

The second they were gone, Colton and Sara finally relaxed. It was like they’d been holding their breath underwater, and now they could finally gulp down air—and water—like their lives depended on it.

Upstairs in the lounge, Patricia poured Oliver a glass of water. “Here, have some. Cool off.”

Oliver took the glass from her. “Did I freak you out?”

He almost never let his feelings show, but those three little troublemakers could really get under his skin. After a few years living with them, he was pretty sure they were going to be the end of him.

“I’m okay,” Patricia said. “Who was that guy you mentioned—Zhao?”

Oliver squeezed her hand as they sat together on the sofa. “He’s the son of one of the bosses at Pacific Capital. He’s messed up—drugs and all that. The kids have gotten way too close to him.”

“I only found out this morning. Otherwise, I would’ve dealt with them last night.”

“That Mr. Medel—is he still at the company?”

“Family scandals don’t affect his work.” Which really meant: the guy’s actually really good at what he does.

That was what Oliver told Patricia, anyway. Only Hector and Lincoln knew what he was actually like at the office.

“Don’t let it get to you,” Patricia said softly, her voice barely above a whisper as she slipped her arms around his waist. “Just hold me, okay?”

Those three little words—hold me—completely melted Mr. Padilla’s heart.

He pulled her into a hug.

They sat together like that, pressed close. After a moment, Oliver let out a quiet sigh.

Raising kids was just too much sometimes.

Thank God they weren’t his biological kids. If his own children ever turned out this hopeless, he’d never forgive himself.

“There’s something I want to talk to you about,” Patricia said.

“If you’re about to ask me to go easy on those three, don’t bother.”

“It’s not about them,” she said.

“Then what is it?”
