You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 484

They stared each other down.

The tension was so thick, it felt like something might snap any second.

Emerson was quiet for a few beats before he finally walked over, shut Tina’s office door, and lowered the blinds.

“What do you expect me to do? She’s my mom. She wants to come back—do you want me to tell her no?” His voice was tight. “Tina, really think about it. Hasn’t my mom treated us okay? If it weren’t for her, would we even have this comfortable life?”

When they took over Martin Group, it was his mom who made it happen behind the scenes—she saved them when things were falling apart. Without her, would they even have the company now?

Just that alone made it impossible for Emerson to just leave her out in the cold.

Every guy wants to be a good son.

But let’s be real—most men dump that responsibility on someone else.

Emerson was no different.

His mom had been a teacher her whole life. Back when he and Tina were struggling, they were always trying to please her, hoping she’d lend a hand.

How many times had Tina had to swallow her pride, just to keep things smooth?

Now they’d finally made it—but she was still supposed to tiptoe around his mom, still expected to serve her?

Call her ungrateful, call her cold-hearted, whatever—Tina just couldn’t bring herself to live under the same roof with his mom anymore.

Seeing her once every couple weeks? She could fake the loving daughter-in-law thing.

But every day? It would drive her crazy.

Emerson could see she wasn’t backing down. He sighed and walked over, putting his arm around her shoulders, gentle and careful. “I know you don’t want to live with my mom, but try to see it my way. She’s getting older, and we’re all she’s got left. You’re at work all day—most nights, you’re only with her for a couple hours. Sometimes we get home and she’s already asleep. There are days you don’t even see her.”

“Just… try to understand where I’m coming from as her son, okay?”

But have you ever tried to understand how I feel as your wife?

You cheat, you’ve got another woman out there, you party all night—and now you want to bring your mom home so I can take care of her like nothing’s wrong?

Tina’s glare could’ve set Emerson on fire.
