You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 488

The question that had been weighing on him for years finally got its answer today, straight from Jackson.

“No.” Just that—no. Two letters, and suddenly, twenty-five years of regret and sorrow just vanished.

The car pulled into the drive at Cloud Peak. Jackson went inside to give Patricia a quick update about work, then left for the guest house to rest.

Like always, he cut through the garden path, picked a piece of wild grass, and popped it into his mouth. Humming something under his breath, he wandered off with Wendy, vanishing into the bushes.

Aiden stood under the eaves, thinking things over. He lingered there until he spotted Marian walking by and called out to her.

“Has Mrs. Evans taken her nap yet?”

“Not yet. She’s downstairs at the tea table, practicing calligraphy. Why, what’s up?”

Aiden hesitated, the words slow to come. “Jackson and I just got back. I think he saw his mom.”

Marian’s eyes went wide. “He did? Then why’d he just come home?”

She pressed, “Did they recognize each other?”

Aiden shook his head. “He didn’t even get out of the car.”

Marian looked uneasy, glancing at the house. “Wait here. I’ll go tell Miss Evans.”

She hurried off and soon came back, waving Aiden in with her.

As he entered, Patricia asked, “Can we check the street cameras from where it happened?”

“Yeah,” Aiden nodded.

“Do it. And while you’re at it, see what you can find out about her these days. Ask the neighbors if you have to.”

“I’ll get on it,” Aiden replied right away.

Patricia gave him a surprised look, a faint smile appearing. “Aiden, you seem pretty invested in Jackson’s business.”

He started, “It’s not that...” then paused, searching for the right words. “Well, maybe not pity, exactly.”

He shrugged. “He’s just a friend, that’s all.”

Patricia chuckled. “Go ahead. No need to tell Jackson.”

Aiden left. Marian picked up a cloth and wiped away the ink Patricia had spilled earlier when she was startled.
