You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 490

This was all just a setup between mother and daughter. They wanted to see if Grandma really came back to rest or if she was actually here to cover for Emerson.

A sound came from the living room entrance.

Grandma stiffened, panic flashing across her face. She could feel the hairs on her arms standing up.

“Why is Ruby back again?”

Ruby ignored the alarm in Grandma’s eyes, reached behind a sofa cushion, and picked up her phone. “Forgot my phone, Grandma.”

Silence settled over the living room.

Grandma sat down slowly, gripping the armrest for support.

In the black Mercedes, Tina gripped the steering wheel, driving around the edge of the city with no real destination. She didn’t say a word until her nerves finally calmed down, minutes later.

“Ruby, do you trust me?”

“I do, Mom.”

“Your dad has a kid with another woman. We can’t let her have that baby. Worst case, if she does, I need to divide our assets with your father before then. I have to do whatever it takes to protect us.”

“He can use his own money to raise that child, but he’s not touching what belongs to us.”

Ruby pressed her lips together. “Dad’s not going to agree to a divorce. If you take him to court and he drags it out, it could take years. By then, the kid will be born and we’ll have lost our leverage.”

No man wants to split half his empire.

Most men want the wife holding down the home and a younger woman outside giving him a son.

If it comes to that, it’s just a fight—either the wife wins or the mistress does.

How many wives in wealthy families end up in suspicious accidents when things go bad?

Tina turned the wheel, pulling the car over to the side of the road.

A streetlight cast its yellow glow through the windshield, lighting up their faces. Shadows hid their features, but the lamplight made every emotion plain.

Ruby turned to look at Tina, her voice steady and clear. “No matter what, we can’t let her have that baby.”
