You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 510

The smell of meat buns lingered in the back of the black town car.

Patricia scrunched up her nose and set her half-eaten bun aside. She pinched out the meat filling, popped the soft, pillowy dough into her mouth, and washed it down with slow sips of soy milk. She finished two buns this way, taking her time.

As they got close to Cloud Peak, Patricia spotted a little breakfast place by the road. “Jackson, pull over,” she said. She bought two sets of breakfast, handing one to Aiden. “Drop this off at Chelsea’s apartment,” she told him. The other set she kept for Cloud Peak.

When Aiden left, Jackson finally broke the silence. “Are you sure Mr. Lantz will help us?”

“He’s not really on our side,” Patricia said, “but he cares about what’s right. That’s good enough.”

Jackson still looked uneasy. “I’m worried.”

“There’s nothing to worry about,” Patricia said with a wave. “Let’s go.”

As they drove, she added, “Tina and Ruby talked Emerson into pouring a ton of money into Ruby’s new company. Now that the scandal’s out, Martin Group’s stock is tanking. Emerson’s going to have a hard time covering that hole...”

Patricia’s tone turned sharp. “Get ready. This is just the beginning.”

“Contact Allen. Make sure he’s paying attention. If they’re willing to play dirty, we don’t need to go easy on his son, either.”

“Got it.”

Cloud Peak’s garden was so much cooler than the city below. At six in the morning, dew clung to every leaf and flower, the whole garden stretching and waking up under the soft light. The shade-loving flowers were in full bloom, bright and open.

Patricia had just stepped inside when Oliver came rushing down the stairs, still in his pajamas.

“You’re up early. Where’d you go?” he asked.

Patricia held up her plastic bag. “Got breakfast.”

Mr. Padilla’s voice was sharp. “Couldn’t someone else do that? Is the staff just for decoration now? Maybe Johns should just let them all go.”

Patricia shot Jackson a look. He quickly took the bag from her and carried it to the dining room, mumbling, “Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”

Patricia laughed, looping her arm through Oliver’s as they headed upstairs. She swung his arm, teasing, “Why are you so cranky this early?”

He frowned. “Seriously, where did you go?”
