The parking lot was quiet except for the hum of distant traffic. Atticus leaned against his car, cigarette dangling between his fingers, a faint swirl of smoke drifting in the cold air.
One by one, the board members filtered out of the building, their voices bouncing off the concrete as they headed for their cars. Atticus glanced up and immediately caught sight of Curtis in the crowd. Their eyes met. Curtis froze for half a second, then made his way over and gave a sharp salute. “Sir.”
Atticus switched the cigarette to his other hand and reached out for a handshake. “Fancy running into you here.”
Curtis grinned a little. “Didn’t expect to see you either, sir.”
“You here to pick up Patricia?”
Curtis nodded. “Yeah.”
Just then, Patricia stepped out of the elevator. Atticus ended the conversation with a nod and hurried over to open the car door for her.
A few board members watched the scene unfold, their whispers carrying across the lot. They didn’t look especially close, but they definitely weren’t strangers either. Everyone knew Patricia’s uncle was a big shot in the Northwest military district—no secret there.
“Atticus? Isn’t he supposed to be stationed out West?” Allen asked, sounding surprised.
“He’s been there for years,” someone replied. “Maybe he’s finally getting transferred back.”
Zheng Pengyi chimed in, “I actually saw him the other day when I went to visit the old governor.”
With the party’s big five-year meeting coming up and new elections around the corner, Atticus showing up in Riverdale now was bound to get people talking. He’d spent decades out West, racking up accolades. If he was really coming back, even the lowest position he could land would be as a leader in a financial hub like Riverdale. Or maybe he’d skip straight to Golden Bay, joining the top executive team.
And today, right when the board was trying to push Emerson out, Atticus showed up, shifting half the attention to Patricia. No wonder everyone left deep in thought, each with their own theories and worries.
