You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 540

The server walked over with an iced Americano, bending down to set the tray on the table. The cup was barely in place when Tina grabbed it and tossed the freezing coffee right into Amber’s face.

Amber squeezed her eyes shut as the cold liquid hit her. Dark coffee ran down her pale cheeks, tracing the round curve of her chin—fuller now because of her pregnancy—before soaking into her clothes.

For a moment, the server just stood there, completely stunned, not sure what to do.

“Amber, you homewrecker. You really have the nerve to come here and show off in front of me, the real Mrs. Martin?” Tina snapped.

Amber didn’t even flinch. She picked up a napkin and calmly wiped coffee from her face. “I’m not here to show off. I just want to talk.”

“Oh, you want to talk? About what, exactly? You expect me to pay fifty million for the bastard you’re carrying?”

“Do you even deserve that?”

“Amber, your good days are over,” Tina hissed. “Once Emerson’s out of power and locked up for murder, I want to see how long you can keep pretending.”

With that, Tina stormed out.

The server waited until she was gone before finally finding his voice. “Are you all right, ma’am?”

“I’m fine. Thank you,” Amber said softly.

She paid the bill, grabbed her purse, and left. Then she took a cab straight to the Martin family house.

When she arrived, Grandma Martin’s eyes filled with tears as she glanced at Amber’s belly. She lifted a hand as if to touch, but stopped herself at the last second. Her gaze fell to Amber’s stained clothes.

“What happened to your clothes, dear? Why are they so dirty?”

“Grandma, I… I just met with Ms. Klotz. I didn’t know what else to do. I haven’t heard anything from Emerson lately and I’m really worried.”

Amber’s voice trembled and, within moments, soft sobs echoed through the living room.

Grandma hurried to comfort her, patting her gently on the back. “Don’t cry, darling. The company’s just having a rough patch. Emerson’s been through worse. It’ll pass, trust me.”

“Crying’s not good for the baby. Have you found out if it’s a boy or a girl yet?”

Amber nodded, dabbing her tears away with a tissue. “Yeah. I found out.”

Grandma’s eyes instantly lit up. “Well? Which is it?”

“It’s a boy.”

“Oh, thank goodness!” Grandma clapped her hands together in delight. “That’s wonderful. A boy!”

She’d spent her whole life hoping for a grandson. Her oldest daughter-in-law never had one before she passed away, and with the younger one nearly past childbearing age, she’d given up hope.

But now—she finally had a grandson on the way.

Grandma looked at Amber’s belly like it was the most precious thing in the world. “You just focus on taking care of yourself and the baby. If Emerson can’t be there, I will. I promise you, I’ll never let my grandson end up out on the streets. You hear me?”

Amber looked up at her, eyes shining with tears. “Really, Grandma? But Ms. Klotz said…”

“What did she say?”

“She said I should have the baby and see what happens…”

The threat in Amber’s tone made Grandma’s face darken. “She really said that?”

Amber nodded.

Grandma’s anger flared. “How dare she!”

“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you, no matter what.”

After Amber left, Grandma turned to the housekeepers with a glare. “Don’t you dare say a word about today’s guest. If anyone talks, they’re fired. Got it?”

That done, she lit three sticks of incense and headed to the prayer room. Kneeling on the cushion, hands folded, she whispered, “Dear ancestors, the Martin family finally has an heir. Finally.”
