At ten thirty, Patricia woke up still half-asleep, sitting there in a daze for what felt like forever before she finally snapped out of it.
She shuffled to the bathroom to get ready and caught the sound of voices drifting up from downstairs—loud, rapid, and nonstop. Curious, she tilted open the blinds and peeked outside.
She spotted some young guy out front, phone in hand, trying to snap a picture of something. Before he could, someone with a serious look strode over and snatched the phone right out of his hand.
Patricia nudged the window open just enough to catch what was being said.
A man’s voice floated up, sharp and clear, “Did you forget? We all signed NDAs. Are you trying to get yourself fired?”
Apparently, Johns had noticed the commotion too. He told the staff to bring out a box and started collecting everyone’s phones—everyone’s except the manager’s, anyway.
Cloud Peak had always been this place wrapped in mystery. When people catch a whiff of serious money, jealousy is never far behind.
“What’s going on downstairs?” Patricia asked, heading into the living room.
Marian came in, balancing a breakfast tray and setting it down on the coffee table. She grinned. “Mr. Padilla’s throwing a dinner party tonight and brought in a whole team of pros to set up. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“It’s wild, isn’t it? Johns said every company working this event has to sign an NDA—even anyone just coming up the mountain.”
Patricia nodded, eyeing the vegetable porridge and side dishes in front of her. She managed about half a bowl before pushing it aside.
“Eat a little more,” Marian encouraged. “You’ve been so busy lately, always out early and coming home late. I bet you barely eat when you’re with Jackson. You’re looking thinner.”
“Jackson’s used to roughing it. He can get by on whatever’s around, but you shouldn’t copy him,” Marian added.
“It’s just too hot. I don’t have much of an appetite,” Patricia mumbled.
Marian shook her head. “You and Sara are total opposites. When it gets hot, Sara just eats more. She’ll finish off an entire bowl of cold salad by herself.”
“She was up in the middle of the night sneaking food and almost had a heart attack when Mr. Padilla caught her. She’s still grumbling about it this morning, saying he did it on purpose. She swears she’s going to tell you as soon as you wake up.”
Patricia laughed, propping her head on her hand.
Marian nudged her playfully. “Come on, finish your porridge and I’ll bring you my new yangmei and lychee drink. It’s ice-cold, sweet and tangy—perfect for beating the heat.”
