After my death, my husband who had wanted to divorce went insane. novel Chapter 13

13

A few days later, once my mother and I had recovered slightly, we completed the transfer to another hospital. Though reluctant, Tanner had no choice but to agree, and during that time, he never left our side.

“I’ve already arranged the surgery. We’ll leave in three days.”

“Thank you, Tanner.”

Since we hadn’t found a nurse after the transfer, Tanner personally applied medicine to my mother’s wounds. His movements were gentle and careful, yet she still let out a faint cry of pain. “It’s my fault,” Tanner murmured, his voice thick with guilt.

“How could it be? You’ve already done so much for me, how could I possibly blame you?”

At that moment, her thoughts were entirely on me, the one set to undergo surgery today. She didn’t even care about her pain.

“Don’t worry. You can trust Kevin to take care of everything.”

As soon as my health had improved slightly over the past few days, the surgery was immediately scheduled. Sitting outside the operating room, I was consumed with unease, partly from the fear of pain, and partly because, after everything, my heart already felt like withered wood.

I had already made up my mind that this surgery would mark the end of everything I had endured.

“Don’t worry, nothing will go wrong. The doctor handling your surgery is one of my dad’s closest friends,” Kevin said softly, giving my shoulder a reassuring pat.

When the surgery began, I was wheeled inside, while Kevin remained quietly outside. Something in the air shifted, and sensing it, he stood up and turned toward the end of the hallway.

It was Cooper.

Since that wedding, Cooper and the others had been admitted to the hospital. Thankfully, the fire hadn’t been severe; they had merely fallen unconscious for a few days and escaped any serious injuries.

“Long time no see, Young Master Timberlake,” Cooper said slowly as he approached, holding a bottle of medicine and a prescription from the doctor.

Kevin didn’t bother to respond. Lately, the Timberlake and Armitage families had become fierce rivals in business; naturally, they stood on opposing sides.

“I heard you got married a few days ago? When did Sabrina divorce you?” Kevin asked, anger flashing in his eyes.

Knowing the bond the three of us had shared since childhood, Cooper understood the implication behind his words. He put on a false expression and answered with practiced ease, pretending I had willingly signed the divorce papers.

“It was all arranged by the elders in my family. Sabrina never had a child, and I couldn’t delay the future of my family any longer. It was just a normal divorce. My relationship with Dixie was always meant to be,” Cooper said with a look of disdain.

Kevin clenched his jaw. “If you had even a shred of conscience, you wouldn’t have helped them stage that crash. Sabrina lay unconscious for days before she opened her eyes, and she was carrying your child.”

Cooper showed no hint of surprise. After Gaten told him about my mother and me escaping, he had already guessed my friends were the ones who rescued me.

“I didn’t want things to go that far either. But Dixie gets upset every time she sees Sabrina. To keep her at ease, of course, I had to act. Besides, she didn’t die, did she?”

His careless tone made Kevin scoff coldly. “She loves me to death, even if she knew I did it, what could she possibly do? If I hadn’t saved her back then, she’d already be dead.”

Kevin could no longer contain his fury. He lunged forward, grabbed Cooper by the collar, and growled that I was in the operating room at that very moment, removing the child and cutting all ties with him for good.

A flicker of shock crossed Cooper’s face, but it quickly melted into a sneer. “She can’t even conceive; only she knows where that child came from. If she wants to cut ties, then she’d better stay out of our lives for good.”

He jerked free, straightened his collar, and walked off with the medicine. Behind him, Kevin trembled with rage, the veins on his forehead bulging, teeth grinding in restraint.

“You know exactly who saved Sabrina back then,” Kevin said icily. “And only you know what your real intentions were all these years.”

The moment the words landed, Cooper’s arrogance shattered. He didn’t dare turn back or argue. Still trying to save face, he forced out coldly, “What happens between Sabrina and me is none of an outsider’s business. Young Master Timberlake, maybe you should worry about yourself.”
