Cooper left gracefully, while Kevin stood there, fuming. His phone rang.
“President Timberlake, we found it, just as you guessed.”
“Very good.”
At last, a faint smile touched Kevin’s lips.
The surgery had ended. I was finally wheeled out. As expected, Tanner had made all the arrangements, everything had gone smoothly, and the procedure wasn’t too painful. I still had some strength left as I came out.
The nurse was about to take the child’s body to the morgue, but I shook my head. Kevin understood immediately, signed the forms, and accepted the small box that held the baby’s
remains.
After the surgery, I caught a glimpse of the child, a chubby baby boy. A soft sigh slipped from my lips. At last, I felt free.
“What do you plan to do with the child?” Kevin asked, taking a seat beside me.
“Send him to the Armitage family, of course,” I replied coldly. “A parting gift.”
Over the years, Elsie had never stopped mocking me, all because my stomach had remained quiet. Even though I had always treated her kindly, never asking her to lift a finger, she stil sneered at me, calling me a hen that couldn’t lay eggs. And every time I dared to get angry. Cooper would rush to her side, blaming me for being disrespectful to my elders.
What she never knew was that after marriage, Cooper rarely stayed home. He avoided physical closeness and seldom touched me.
This child had been in an accident that night; he was dead drunk and suddenly pulled me into his arms. The warmth in that embrace was something I had nearly forgotten existed.
“This gift… I’m sure the family will be pleased with it.” My fingers traced the edge of the box. I had once resented being tricked into signing the divorce papers. Still, his recent actions had completely frozen what little warmth was left in my heart. Now, I just wanted to end it all and walk away from the ruins.
Seeing how resolute I was, Kevin didn’t mention his earlier encounter with Cooper again.
‘I should be the one thanking you. Once everything’s done, we really ought to sit down with Ava too. I’m sure she’s been losing sleep over me these days.”
After the surgery, Ava was the first to call me. Before that, my phone had been flooded with dozens of missed calls and messages. I hadn’t let her stay by my side, wanting her to rest instead, yet she still couldn’t stop worrying.

Kevin nodded sincerely, and after a brief call with my mother, I got ready to go home and recover. Even before the surgery, Kevin had been running around taking care of everything. I wanted him to get some rest, too, so I asked him to wait in place for me.
“Your surgery report will be out soon,” Kevin reminded gently. “And we still need to pick up your medication. Don’t forget to bring the report with you.”
Following his instructions, I sat quietly on the hallway sofa, waiting for the report. While waiting,
I deleted all of Cooper’s contact information from my phone. That was when I saw his latest post on social media:
“The fire witnessed our love. From now on, I’ll protect you and the child well.”
The photo beneath showed Cooper holding the still-unconscious Dixie in his arms.
The post was from two days ago, so after the wedding, neither of them had been seriously harmed. I scrolled through the comments praising Cooper’s so-called devotion, then calmly blocked him on every platform.
When I finally received the report, I went downstairs to get my medicine, only to hear a familiar voice. Peering around the corner, I saw it was Dixie. Instinctively, I shrank back, not wanting any more entanglements with them.
Since waking up, Dixie had cared only about the safety of her child, despite suffering nothing more than a few minor burns. Cooper had brought her for a check-up, and the moment she heard the baby was unharmed, she finally let out a breath of relief.
Clutching the report with joy, she threw herself into Cooper’s arms with teary excitement.
‘Thank goodness, our baby’s fine.”
Seeing the burns still fresh on her body, Cooper’s eyes were filled with gentle affection.
‘Dixie, don’t worry. Once you’ve healed, we’ll hold the wedding again. This time, no one will ruin t.”
But Dixie, clearly suspecting I had something to do with the chaos, laced her words with cruel nockery.
‘Sabrina is a pitiful wretch, pregnant with some bastard child and still trying to take me down. t’s a good thing I’ve always been lucky. Last time, I should’ve ended it faster, if only she had just stopped breathing then.”
