When I stepped out of the car, the sunlight hit my face. A small smile played on my lips because he actually told me his name. Although he asked me to forget about it soon after.

I didn’t understand him, really. He was caring yet cold at the same time.

He walked ahead of me, leading me to a space where I saw some of the same people at the auction yesterday. Some were still in their glittering dresses, others barefoot, dazed, clutching coats that didn’t belong to them.

There were men too, all of them tall, sharpfeatured, and almost too perfectlooking. When they saw Abel, they immediately straightened, their expressions turning serious. Then, they bowed slightly as he passed.

I tilted my head. Was Abel someone important here?

Abel, on the other hand, just gave them a curt nod and turned to a tall man with dark skin and a buzzed head.

Bring them back safely,he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. Make sure no one gets left behind.

Yup,” the man responded. Then, he hesitated.

Damon is fuming, by the way,he muttered. He knows it was you.”

Abel sighed before lifting his hand, pressing his thumb and forefinger against the bridge of his nose. The simple movement made the muscles in his forearm flex under the sunlight, and for some reason, that stupid little detail made my heart skip a beat.

I bit my lip. Why did he have to look so good even when he was stressed?

It seemed I wasn’t the only one who thought so.

Around me, I heard soft whispers from the other girls who’d been rescued. They huddled together, murmuring under their breath.

Damn, who is he?

Was he part of the raid?

I wouldn’t mind being bought by him.

Their words blurred together, but I caught enough of them to know that I wasn’t imagining it. Everyone could feel the magnetic presence Abel carried so effortlessly.

But when I looked at him, something else stirred in my chest.

Mine.

The word came uninvited, echoing in my head like it wasn’t mine at all. My pulse jumped, and I almost gasped.

What the heck?

We just spent one night together. That was all. And even then, it wasn’t something that was supposed to happen.

Still, no one had ever made me feel like this. Not even Joshua Saint.

Abel finally spoke again, breaking my trance. I’ll take care of it,he muttered.

The man nodded and stepped back, falling silent. Abel turned his attention to the rest of the

group.

I apologize for the inconvenience,” he said. It won’t happen again. You will all be escorted back to your homes safely, so please board the boat.”

He said it so simply, but everyone listened.

Then, he turned.

Our eyes met.

It lasted only a second, but the world seemed to still.

His gaze caught mine, and my breath hitched. Abel’s expression didn’t change. He gave me one last look, then turned away, his hands sliding into his pockets as he started walking back to his car.

I watched him go until the sound of his footsteps faded, swallowed by the hum of engines and the noise of people being organized for transport.

He didn’t look back.

But I still stood there, my hands gripping his shirt that I was wearing, my chest aching like

something inside me had been pulled apart just a little.

It was ridiculous. I should’ve been gratefulnothing more.

And yet, as the gates creaked open and the others began filing out, I couldn’t help glancing one more time in the direction he went.

Even though I was free, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d just left something behind.

I leaned on the railing, staring at the island growing smaller behind us until it was nothing more than a blur against the horizon.

It still didn’t feel real.

I exhaled slowly, watching the mist of my breath disappear.

Hey,a voice said beside me.

I turned and saw Vicky standing there, holding a bottle of water, her dyed platinum hair messy from the wind. She still wore the lingerie from last night under a borrowed jacket. Somehow, she didn’t seem embarrassed about it.

Vicky,I said, surprised to see her. You’re safe. I’m glad to see you here.”

She grinned, taking a sip of water. That man was fine, right?

I nearly choked on air.

What?

Come on,she laughed, bumping her shoulder against mine. That guy. The one who picked

I felt my cheeks heat up instantly.

He didn’t pick me,I stammered. He just-

Vicky raised a brow, a teasing glint in her eyes. Didn’t you two come here together this morning? You can’t fool me.

I bit my lip, not trusting myself to answer.

Vicky whistled. Damn, girl!

I turned away, hoping the sea breeze could cool my face.

Everyone was talking about how hot he was,she continued, clearly enjoying this. No offense, but I think half the girls there wanted a piece.”

Her words tugged at something in my chest. I didn’t like the sound of that.

Still, I smiled. You think so?

Oh, absolutely, she said, leaning on the railing beside me.

I didn’t respond. My thoughts were spinning, each one pulling me back to last night.

Then, Vicky smirked again, lowering her voice. Sohow was he in bed?

What?

Don’t know what me.” Her smirk grew wider. You’re glowing, Luna. Don’t act innocent.”
