“That’s ridiculous!” I exclaimed. A laugh bubbled out of Marcel through the phone.

“I’m not kidding,” she said. “He’s been pestering me nonstop so he could go to you. Like, girl, what was I supposed to say? I didn’t even know where you were!”
“And even if I knew, I wouldn’t have told him.”
I pressed my lips together and leaned against the counter, the wooden spoon in my hand
head. dripping broth back into the pot. “That’s impossible,” I muttered, shaking my
“Impossible, she says,” Marcel mocked lightly. “You’re such a charmer, Luna. You got Joshua Saint wrapped around your finger, and now you’ve got a hot Alpha daddy under the same roof.”
“Abel,” I corrected quickly. “His name is Abel.”
“Oh, sorry, sorry,” she said, giggling. “Only you can call him hot Alpha daddy, then.”
I groaned and rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t help the faint laugh that escaped.
“Even if you’re not here,” Marcel went on, “I can’t help but feel happy for you. You’re not under Queenie’s and Princess‘ shackles anymore.”
“In fact, Princess can’t even eat with her usual clique anymore because her so–called friends have dispersed. Apparently, everyone’s tired of her tantrums.”
“And oh! The workers in the diner went on strike to support you.”
My breath hitched. “What? They need to make a livelihood too, though.” I set the spoon down and rubbed my temple. “They can’t just stop working. That’s their only source of income.”
“I talked to Tony,” she said, pertaining to the main chef, one who has worked at the diner since it was still named after me. “He told me he’s sick of it all. The gossip, the favoritism, the way they treated you. He said he has some money saved up, so he’ll be fine. He even told me that there’s nothing to worry about.”
I exhaled slowly. “He said that?”
“Yup.”

I brushed a strand of hair away from my face, the corners of my mouth lifting without permission. “I can’t believe this,” I murmured.
“Believe it,” Marcel said.

“Anyway,” Marcel continued, her tone taking on a dreamy tone, “you even have someone who likes you now.”
“Abel looks at you with so much fondness that it’s insane,” she added.
I stared blankly at the wall in front of me.
“Anyway, update me, okay? I’ll send updates, too,” she said, snapping me out of my thoughts. “I gotta head home now. The librarian’s life isn’t as chill as I thought, but it’s still more fun than working at the diner.”
I chuckled. “Talk to you later, Marcel.”
“Don’t ghost me again!” she warned.
“I won’t.”
“Good. Bye, babe.”
The call ended with a cheerful beep.
I stood there for a long moment, staring at the phone.
‘You finally have someone who loves
you now.‘
The words echoed in my mind. I shook my head, a small, self–deprecating laugh escaping. “That’s not true,” I murmured to the empty room.
Still, as I stirred the soup, my chest felt heavier than before. I grabbed a spoon and tasted the broth. It was as rich and good as I remembered.
“I hope Abel likes this one,” I whispered, a small hopeful smile appearing on my lips.

Had I fallen asleep?
My neck ached when I stirred, the faint ticking of the clock echoing through the quiet house. I squinted at the dim light of the kitchen. The pot of soup on the stove had long gone cold, the steam replaced by a thin film that told me hours had passed.

I straightened up, rubbing my eyes. My head must’ve dropped on my arms while I was waiting. The faint sound of the door unlocking made my heart skip. I turned toward it instinctively, my body already alert.
The door opened, and Abel revealed himself.
He stepped inside with his hair tousled and his shoulders looking heavier than usual. He paused when he saw me sitting there on the couch.
“Why are you sleeping there?” he asked.
“I was waiting for you,” I muttered. I pushed myself up, trying to shake the drowsiness from my body. “You said you’d be late, but I thought maybe—”
He took a single step back. It was subtle, but I noticed. My heart sank. “Have you eaten?” I asked softly. “I made some soup. I could heat it up for you.”
“I’ve eaten,” he said in a sharp tone.
Then, he ran a hand through his hair and let out a quiet sigh. “I told you not to do these things for me.”
The breath caught in my throat. I didn’t even realize I’d been holding it. “I just thought—”
“Just sleep,” he said, cutting me off again. His voice wasn’t angry, but it wasn’t kind either.
