Kingston City
A prestigious Ivy League-level university
Klein had two back-to-back lectures that afternoon. By the time he finished teaching, dusk was already pressing in.
As usual, after class he found himself surrounded by eager students, all brimming with questions. By the time he answered each one, it was well past six.
"Thank you for your time, Professor Sheffield! We won't keep you any longer. Have a good evening!"
Once the last two students had left, Klein finally gathered his notes and prepared to leave the multipurpose classroom.
"Professor Sheffield!"
Someone called out to him.
He looked up and saw Zoe standing by the back door of the classroom.
"Haven't you had dinner yet?" He glanced at his watch. It was already 6:15.
Zoe looked nervous, as if she didn't want to be seen. She peered into the hallway to make sure no one was around before making her way toward Klein.
Suddenly, Klein remembered something his daughter had said. Before Zoe could come any closer, he spoke up, "If you have any questions, Zoe, we can go over them next class."
Zoe stopped a few feet away, not stepping onto the platform. "Professor Sheffield, actually, I do need to talk to you about something."
"What is it?" Klein noticed how she hesitated, her expression troubled, as if something serious was weighing on her.
With a worried look, Zoe pulled out her phone. "I haven't been able to reach Willow the past two days. I'm a little concerned."
"Willow?" Klein was puzzled. "How do you know Willow?"
"Here, Professor Sheffield. Please watch."
Klein took the phone, eyebrows raised, and pressed play. Zoe watched his face closely for any reaction.
He watched the three-minute clip in silence, his lips pressed together. When it ended, his eyes reflected surprise and concern—though there was no trace of shame, anger, or relief.
The video was a grainy hospital recording that had gone viral online the night before. The man in the footage was none other than Beasley, the renowned CEO of Windsor & Co. The woman beside him—Klein's only daughter, Willow.
No one at the university had ever met Willow, or knew what she looked like, so no one had connected the dots between the mysterious woman in the scandalous video and Professor Sheffield's daughter.
But Zoe had met Willow before. She'd recognized her instantly.
"Professor Sheffield, I also saved some screenshots of the gossip articles," Zoe offered helpfully once he'd finished the video.
Most of the footage and headlines had already been scrubbed from the internet, but Zoe had been quick—capturing and saving everything the moment she saw it.
