Beasley had been listening quietly the whole time, only breaking his silence when York paused to take a sip of his drink.
“So you’re saying Lionel is after Cordelia Worthington?”
That was the first thing Beasley asked once York finished his story.
York set his glass down. “Yeah, he’s making it pretty obvious. Not even trying to hide it.”
The furrow between Beasley’s brows eased a little.
So Evelyn really was exaggerating things.
Then York added, “But honestly, I think Lionel also has his eye on Willow.”
Beasley’s brow immediately creased again. “What makes you think that?”
Still, considering York’s history of wild speculation—like when he’d jumped to conclusions about Willow and Klein at the car dealership—Beasley managed to keep his composure.
York rushed to explain, “Just to be clear, after you told me to stop meddling in your ex-wife’s business, I really haven’t been keeping tabs on her. This is just something I found out by accident right after I got back into town.”
Once he finished stacking his chips, York confessed how, back when he and Beasley parted ways at the Anglemont Hotel, curiosity got the better of him and he’d secretly followed Willow to see where she was staying.
“I mean, I used to suspect she was cheating on you, right? That’s the only reason I did it. You can’t blame me.”
After laying out his excuses, York tried to justify himself once more.
Beasley’s expression went cold.
So after Willow moved out of Baycrest Villas, she’d been living at Lionel’s hotel all this time?
He’d looked into the entry and exit records for Baycrest Villas and discovered that Willow left the morning he had his lawyer deliver the divorce papers—and she never returned.
Even when he stopped the sale of the villa and the jewelry his mother had given her, Willow never asked about any of it. It was as if, once those things were put up for sale, they no longer had anything to do with her.
“But honestly, Eve and your ex-wife are like oil and water. I’ve never seen her hate anyone this much.”
By now, Beasley had lost all interest in drinking or talking about Willow any further.
“I’m heading out.” With that, he stood up.
York blinked in surprise. “Already? We’ve barely been here an hour!”
“Yeah, I’ve got some things to take care of.” Beasley grabbed his coat from the couch and shrugged it on. “Let’s catch up another time.”
York sighed. “Alright, you go on ahead. I’ll stick around and have another drink or two.”
After all, once he got home, he’d have to face reality and shoulder all his responsibilities again.
For now, he’d let himself unwind just a little longer.
