“I like to doodle and write,” Willow said lightly, not offering up any more details.
Maurice’s eyes widened in surprise. “You? Doodling and writing? Didn’t take you for the artsy type. You really hid it well.”
“You work with ceramics, don’t you? That’s pretty artistic too,” Willow shot back with a laugh.
“You two are clearly close,” someone remarked.
The department head, having just finished making the rounds with drinks, noticed Willow wasn’t among the group. As he searched, he spotted her and Maurice chatting and laughing off to the side, deep in some private, amusing conversation.
Willow glanced up at the comment, meeting the department head’s good-natured gaze.
Not wanting any misunderstandings, she blurted out, “Oh, it’s not like that. He’s like a little brother to me.”
Maurice’s eyes went even wider. Inwardly, he groaned, I already have three older sisters at home, thank you very much. I don’t need another!
Even if technically, they’re all cousins.
The department head chuckled. “A pair of brainy siblings, huh? Not bad.”
Maurice quirked an eyebrow, mulling it over. “Brainy siblings” didn’t sound half bad, actually, so he let it slide.
Then the department head remembered something Dr. Grant had mentioned. “By the way, Dr. Grant will be joining us after his meeting. Don’t disappear too soon, all right?”
Once tonight’s celebration wrapped up, everyone would finally be free to head home.
As luck would have it, Dr. Grant had been pulled into an emergency meeting, so he’d be running late.
Willow nodded. “I’ll wait until Dr. Grant arrives before I leave.”
Maurice nodded as well, already scheming about that new secret project. Maybe if he caught Dr. Grant’s attention tonight, he’d get picked for it.
Dr. Grant smiled at him. “Let’s talk about that after you’ve all had a proper rest. No rush.”
The other two team members, seeing Maurice’s opening, took the opportunity to ask Dr. Grant some questions of their own—mostly about switching careers.
Turned out, both were hoping to leave the field and start their own ventures, and they needed Dr. Grant’s recommendation.
It made sense. With the relentless pace and pressure of research work, it wasn’t for everyone.
Dr. Grant didn’t object or brush them off. Instead, he shared stories about former colleagues and their experiences making a career change.
After that, the two younger team members left, leaving only Willow, Maurice, and Dr. Grant.
This time, Dr. Grant got straight to the point. Even with Maurice still present, she didn’t avoid the topic.
Her expression softened as she looked at Willow. “Willa, now that this project’s over... Remember those two gentlemen Ms. Whitmore wanted to introduce to you? Maybe you should give them some serious thought.”
