Connor shot a sharp glance at the chatty nurse.
Her colleague immediately tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to keep quiet and not risk angering this troublemaker—especially one who had the chief of police in his corner.
Ryan walked back to where he'd been standing before—a counter with a body cam resting on top, its lens facing them, the light still blinking.
He reached over, switched it off, and picked it up.
Vivian wasn’t stupid; she caught on almost instantly.
“You—you recorded everything just now?”
Panic flashed across her face.
Everyone else stared at Ryan in shock.
Ryan’s expression didn’t change. He nodded. “That’s right. Everything’s on here. Every word, every move, even Commissioner Hale’s voice.”
Vivian went pale, trying to steady her voice. “But you didn’t warn us ahead of time. That’s a serious violation. You could be punished for this!”
Ryan shrugged. “I’m about to lose my job anyway. What’s another disciplinary hearing to me?”
Vivian was speechless, her mind spinning.
“What do you want?” Connor’s voice was cold and threatening.
Old Mrs. Mitchell, sensing the shift in the room, shot her housekeeper a look, clearly hoping she’d snatch the body cam from Ryan. The woman hesitated; Ryan was well over six feet, broad-shouldered and solid. There was no way a middle-aged housekeeper would dare try.
Ryan glanced at Connor, then down at the device in his hand. “You come down to the station and answer a few questions, and this footage stays between us.”
Vivian, clearly rattled, clutched her phone and hurried out of the room to call her brother again.
Ryan didn’t stop her. He figured that after the call, she’d come back and convince Connor to cooperate.

At the precinct—
Willow and Lucy had both finished giving their statements. Lucy could have left right away, but she decided to stay, anxious for Willow and wanting to see how things turned out.
During Willow’s interview, the detective questioning her had stepped out for a moment. When he returned, his attitude had shifted—no more pointed questions, no more leading the conversation.
Willow could guess why.
In her previous life, when she first met Officer Ryan, he was already a celebrated detective known for cracking the toughest cases.
Of course, she’d only met Ryan because of Ian—his father was Ryan’s uncle; Ryan and Ian were cousins.
Now, in this life, their paths had crossed almost four years earlier. Ryan was just a beat cop right now, but Willow was certain: his sense of justice hadn’t changed. He was as fair and fearless as ever, someone who never turned a blind eye to wrongdoing.
