Johanna instantly zeroed in on the real issue and scoffed, “Is it because you’re too much of a flirt? You literally picked up another girl yourself today—if it were me, I wouldn’t say yes either.”
She was still hoping Lionel could help her out, maybe talk Juliette into convincing Willow to tutor her daughter.
Lionel protested, “Come on, Aunt Jo, you’ve got it all wrong. Miss Worthington is just like a little sister to me.”
Johanna’s look turned even more disdainful. “A little sister, huh? You sure about that? You know there’s no blood relation—don’t you realize you’re playing with fire?”
Lionel couldn’t help but laugh. “Fine, then let’s just say she’s a regular friend. Does that work?”
That only seemed to make Johanna’s tone even more incredulous. “Oh, please. There’s no such thing as a totally innocent friendship between a man and a woman.”
Lionel was left speechless. “Aunt Jo, did Uncle do something to annoy you lately? You’re really not pulling any punches today.”
“Trust me, I don’t need your uncle to teach me these things. This is wisdom passed down from countless women before me.” Suddenly her expression softened, and she spoke more earnestly. “If you’re really not interested in Miss Worthington, then keep your distance from now on. Especially since you haven’t even managed to win your girlfriend over yet—if you don’t learn to set some boundaries, you might end up single for life.”
Lionel knew she was only looking out for him, so he nodded solemnly. “Got it, Aunt Jo. I promise, once I get back, I’ll cut off all contact.”
Johanna shot him a sideways glance. “You’d better keep your word. I’m still waiting for your wedding invite, you know.”
Lionel couldn’t help but imagine Juliette in a wedding dress; the thought made his smile practically reach his ears. “Don’t worry, Aunt Jo. When the day comes, you’d better promise to have a few extra drinks for me!”
Seeing how confident he was, Johanna finally decided to let him handle persuading Willow and filled him in on her plan to have Willow tutor Tina.
Lionel agreed readily. “No problem at all. I’ll do everything I can to help Tina get the best tutor!”
Johanna finally smiled, satisfied.
…
So why was he calling now?
Could it be… the man she just passed in the black sedan was Beasley?
It made sense. His penthouse was in this very neighborhood, and besides, he’d always recognized her car. She, on the other hand, had no idea how many cars he owned—some she’d never even seen before.
Willow let the phone ring out without answering.
A moment later, a new WhatsApp message came in.
Another one from Beasley.
By then, Willow had already exited the wealthy enclave and was heading toward Cliffhaven Gardens. She ignored whatever message he’d sent, her eyes fixed on the road ahead.
