Boss, Your Ex-Wife is Unreachable Now! novel Chapter 68

Windsor Manor

That weekend, Jameson and the old lady finally returned from Stratus City, nearly a week later than planned.

"Grandma, did you and Grandpa lose all track of time out there?" Evelyn called out the moment she walked through the door, hurrying over to link arms with Laverne in a warm embrace. "You were gone for over a week! You have no idea how much your granddaughter missed you."

Laverne absolutely doted on her granddaughter. Evelyn was the only one who ever showed her such affection. Her grandson, Beasley, had never been the cuddly type—not as a child, not now. He rarely even smiled. No matter how much Laverne wanted to shower him with love, she never quite figured out how to reach him.

"Eve, your grandpa and I brought loads of gifts for you from Stratus City," Laverne said, patting Evelyn's hand with grandmotherly fondness, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes deepening with her smile. "When you go home tonight, be sure to have Nadine and Walter help you carry everything."

"Thank you, Grandma!" Evelyn replied sweetly, nodding her head. She glanced around the foyer and asked, "Where's Grandpa? And have Uncle and Aunt come back from their trip yet?"

After Evelyn turned eighteen, her uncle's family moved out, and Beasley moved into his own place after getting married. These days, only Beasley's parents and her grandparents lived in Windsor Manor full time. The extended family would come over for holidays or the occasional Sunday dinner.

Laverne led Evelyn to the sofa, and a maid soon appeared with tea and pastries. Only then did she smile and explain, "Your grandpa is in the study, playing chess with your brother. Your uncle and aunt returned this morning, but they're still upstairs resting—they're jet-lagged from their flight."

Evelyn grinned, "Then I'll wait until they're up before I go say hello."

Such a good girl, Laverne thought, her smile growing even fonder.

Evelyn barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes. Willow—a woman who couldn't even manage to keep a houseplant alive—was going to have a baby?

But she knew just how to keep her grandmother happy. Widening her eyes in delight, she exclaimed, "Wow, Grandma, that sounds amazing! We definitely need to have Beasley and Willow give it a try. Who knows? Maybe next year you'll be holding your very first great-grandchild, and I'll finally get to be an aunt!"

Evelyn was well aware that her brother had no patience for Willow. The more their grandmother meddled, the more Beasley resented his wife.

So why stop Laverne from interfering? In fact, maybe she could give things a little nudge.

"Grandma, since Willow isn't here right now, why not talk to Beasley first?" she suggested, lowering her voice as if sharing a secret. "If he's not on board, I doubt Willow will dare to try your recipe anyway."
