Boss, Your Ex-Wife is Unreachable Now! novel Chapter 69

Evelyn's thoughts were simple: the old lady could easily keep Willow in check. But if this remedy actually worked, wouldn't that mean Willow would benefit from it? No way was Evelyn going to let something so good fall into Willow's lap.

She wasn't about to do any favors for that woman.

But if the old lady tried to go through her brother, it would only tip him off. He'd get suspicious, and the whole plan would fall apart.

"This remedy is meant for women. There's no need for your brother to know. When Willow comes over for dinner tonight, I'll find a chance to give it to her," the old lady said, brushing aside Evelyn's suggestion.

Evelyn wasn't discouraged. Now that she knew what was going on, she could just warn her brother herself.

As long as her brother was in the loop, there was no way that woman Willow could get her way.

Upstairs in the study.

"You lost again. What's going on with you?" Jameson shot a disapproving glance at his grandson.

They'd played three games of chess, and Beasley had lost every single one—by the narrowest of margins, too. Not even one piece more than necessary.

"If I actually won, Grandpa, wouldn't that hurt your pride?" Beasley replied with a calm smile, looking completely unbothered by the idea of his grandfather flipping the table.

Jameson was both amused and exasperated. "You always make sure I win by just a pawn. Does that really make me look good?"

Beasley, still unruffled, insisted, "Well, I can't lose too badly, either."

Jameson just sighed in defeat.

He was starting to regret insisting his grandson play chess with him.

Winning like this was even more annoying than losing outright.

"Another game?" Beasley asked.

"No, that's enough." Jameson started gathering up the chess pieces.

Seeing his grandfather's stunned, slightly crestfallen expression, Beasley finally offered an explanation. "This project is under review by the military. We're hoping to become an approved contractor."

Jameson relaxed a little at that.

"It's alright, just forget I mentioned it. This wasn't even Addison's idea—I'm just meddling," Jameson explained, making it clear Beasley shouldn't hold it against his uncle.

Beasley nodded. "I know. Uncle Addison has never asked me for any backdoor favors."

Jameson silently grumbled—this boy could drive him mad.

He'd always felt sorry for his second son. Years ago, he'd chosen his eldest to inherit the family business. Both sons were dear to him, but giving power to one always felt like shortchanging the other.

His eldest had been easy enough to deal with, but this grandson of his—he was like a block of ice: cold, unyielding, impossible to soften.

Jameson had no idea how Willow managed to live with him. He couldn't help but marvel at her patience.
