The weekend passed in the blink of an eye. By Sunday evening, Willow was driving her new car back to the base.
Her days at the Research Institute were busy but fulfilling, and before she knew it, another three days had gone by. During lunch break that day, Dr. Penelope Grant dropped by the base. She'd come specifically to see Willow—not just to get an update on the progress of the air-launched drone project, but also to ask if Willow was free this coming weekend.
"My dad and I are planning to visit Ms. Whitmore this weekend. We haven't decided yet whether we'll go on Saturday or Sunday morning," Willow answered honestly. She poured Dr. Grant a cup of warm water and handed it to her. "Did you need something from me this weekend?"
Each researcher at the base had their own private suite, complete with a small balcony. This was Willow's room, and there was still over half an hour left before lunch break ended.
Dr. Grant took the cup with a smile. "It's nothing urgent. Since you're busy this weekend, let's talk another day."
They chatted a little longer before Dr. Grant took her leave.
Willow rinsed the cup and set it back in its place. Just then, someone knocked at her door again.
"Come in."
It was Maurice, clutching a pen and a stack of data analysis sheets—obviously unable to switch off even during his break. He must have heard voices and hurried over.
"What did Dr. Grant want with you? I saw her leaving and don't try to deny it!" Maurice leaned in, his face alight with obvious curiosity.
Willow glanced at the papers in his hands. "Trying to multitask? Not the best way to get things done."
That's when Maurice realized he'd brought his work with him. His room was right next door, so he could always hear when Willow opened or closed her door.
"Hey, don't change the subject!" Maurice wasn't letting it go. "Was Dr. Grant here to secretly assign you a special mission or something?"
Willow almost rolled her eyes, but managed to keep her composure.
"She just wanted to ask about the drone project's progress, that's all."
Maurice wasn't buying it. His sharp eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Come on, if Dr. Grant wanted a progress report, she could just go to the lab and check the logs. Why sneak over to your room? Doesn't that strike you as odd?"
Willow actually agreed. Dr. Grant's real reason for coming was probably something she'd left unsaid.
But since Dr. Grant hadn't told her, there was no way Willow could know for sure.

Windsor & Co.
That afternoon, Beasley had an important meeting about Project Stormhawk. Ten minutes before the meeting, he got a call from Sanford.
"Mr. Windsor, I've got results on the person you asked me to look into. Would you prefer to hear over the phone, or should I come by in person?"
Beasley immediately sensed that the results weren't simple—Sanford wouldn't have asked otherwise.
He paused, then replied, "I have a critical meeting coming up. Come by at four this afternoon."
"Understood."
Ending the call, Beasley found himself looking forward to whatever surprise the investigation might bring.
The mastermind behind STAR—he was determined to uncover their identity.
