4:00 p.m., President's Office, Windsor & Co.
Sanford arrived right on time with his findings in hand.
Beasley had just finished a two-and-a-half-hour board meeting. His sharp, handsome features showed no trace of fatigue, but the calm, icy blue of his eyes flickered with shock the moment Sanford mentioned a particular name.
"What did you just say?"
Sanford didn't blame President Windsor for his reaction; he'd been floored himself when he'd first uncovered the lead.
He repeated himself, steady and clear. "It's highly likely that STAR is your wife, Miss Willow."
With that, he laid out all the documents he'd gathered over the past few days, spreading them across Beasley's polished desk.
"My first step was to look into STAR's Twitter account. The account is registered under a man named Ablitt. I dug deeper—Ablitt is STAR's editor, and has been her sole editor for the past several years."
Beasley stayed silent, his expression unreadable as he listened.
"I followed that trail and checked Ablitt's phone records." Sanford pulled a printed log from the stack, tapping a number with his finger. "Among all the calls, I found your wife's cell number."
At that, Beasley's eyes narrowed, but he still didn't interrupt.
Sanford pressed on. "Your wife and Ablitt have been in regular contact for five years. Given STAR's publishing routine—one book a year—this year marks the fifth."
He added, "Of course, this alone isn't definitive proof. I also hacked into the publishing house's contract database. There's no electronic contract under the pen name STAR."
"There's only one explanation for that: STAR must be using old-fashioned paper contracts, with no digital copies on file—everything is stored offline, on paper only."
In that case, even the best hacker would hit a dead end.
Still, Evelyn was Beasley's cousin, so he had to tread lightly.
Beasley listened quietly, shock and confusion warring beneath his composed exterior.
He picked up the documents Sanford had compiled, studying them in silence.
He trusted Sanford's judgment.
But how could STAR possibly be Willow?
Three years of marriage, and he realized now he barely knew the woman beside him at all.
Was she just that good at hiding? Or had he simply never bothered to look deeper?
