"I need you to look into someone else for me."
Beasley set the files down and pointed at a number listed on the call log—Willow's phone number. "As soon as possible."
Sanford hesitated for only a moment before regaining his composure. He accepted the task with a quick nod. "Understood. I'll get on it right away."
With that, Sanford gathered the documents he'd brought and left the CEO's office.
Beasley rose and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing down at the city sprawled out below him.
If his ex-wife really was the mysterious sci-fi author known as STAR, could he use that knowledge to pressure her? Maybe even coax out the name of the expert who'd found evidence to clear her name of plagiarism?
But before any of that, he needed to be sure. He needed proof.
Beasley pulled out his phone, his icy eyes fixed on the distant skyline as he dialed Evelyn's number.
"Hey, big brother! Did you need something?" His cousin Evelyn's voice chimed through, bright and surprised.
He almost never called her first.
"Did you ever take anything of your sister-in-law's?" Beasley asked, his tone unreadable.
There was a pause before Evelyn huffed, trying to sound indignant. "I—why would I take her things?"
"Think carefully."
Silence again.
"Evelyn. Tell me the truth."
Beasley's cool, distant voice carried its own natural authority, and his tone was even more severe than usual.
"Why did you burn it?" Beasley pressed.
So Evelyn recounted what had happened.
As soon as he heard Emmett's name, everything clicked for Beasley.
His ex-wife really was STAR.
"Are you looking for that notebook, or is this something Willow asked you to do?" Evelyn asked, her voice tinged with a touch of grievance. "It's been three years—why are you only now asking about it?"
"It's burned, so let it go. And don't ever bring it up in front of your sister-in-law again," Beasley replied flatly.
That was more than Evelyn could have hoped for. She rushed to agree. "Of course! I promise I'll never mention it again!"
