Boss, Your Ex-Wife is Unreachable Now! novel Chapter 88

Beasley caught the subtle shift in the air around Willow, a faint, lingering sadness weaving through her presence—close enough to touch, yet always just out of reach.

He watched her, noting the way her usually cool, distant features drew together in a slight frown. Was she remembering something that broke her heart?

He was about to probe further, but in an instant, that fleeting sorrow vanished. It was as if a curtain had fallen; blink and you'd miss it. The sadness was gone without a trace.

"You came here for information about that person, didn't you?" Willow's question cut through the silence.

Beasley hesitated, thrown off for a moment. The woman before him was all sharp cheekbones and frosty composure, wrapped in layers of reserve so thick they left no room for grief. If he hadn't seen it himself, he'd have sworn there was never any sadness at all.

"That's right," he replied, his voice even as he hid whatever emotion threatened to surface.

Willow's eyes narrowed. "And if I refuse to tell you—what then?"

"You'd use STAR's real identity to threaten me, wouldn't you?" She didn't wait for his answer; she already knew.

Beasley didn't confirm or deny it, but a flash of something unreadable flickered behind his calm exterior. Without realizing it, he'd let her take control of the conversation.

Still, years spent navigating boardrooms and negotiations had taught him to keep his composure. He schooled his features into practiced indifference. "Aren't you afraid?"

"Afraid of what?" Willow smiled, meeting his ice-blue stare across the room. There was a teasing note in her voice as she reminded him, "You're forgetting, Beasley. It was your idea to keep our marriage a secret, to stay low-profile and avoid trouble. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have had to hide STAR's identity from the world."

"And besides, I never meant to keep it from you. You just never cared enough to find out."

Just like that, Willow dismantled the leverage he'd counted on.

Beasley found himself half-surprised, half-impressed. If he'd been dealing with the Willow from a few days ago, this would've caught him off guard. But the woman standing before him was STAR—the mind behind *Sudden Dawn*, a sci-fi masterpiece that had stunned the literary world.

He couldn't bring himself to feel anything but admiration. He had always had a weakness for talent.

"Good. As long as you're safe. What do you want for lunch?" he asked. "I picked up plenty of groceries—just tell me what you're craving, and I'll make it for you."

Willow rattled off a few dishes, and her father promised to cook them all.

Across the room, Beasley listened in silence, watching her with a faint, wry smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. He still had cards to play, and STAR's secret was just one of them.

When Willow hung up, she turned to him and said flatly, "You heard my dad. He's waiting for me. Please leave—now."

Beasley's eyes narrowed. For once, he didn't argue; he stood, smoothing out his jacket. "Since you're busy, we'll continue this another time."

Willow frowned at his cavalier attitude. The man was impossible.

In her mind, Beasley earned himself yet another black mark.
