Chapter 414 A Song in the Dark
Leslie’s POV
When the meeting ended, I said goodbye to Adler outside the doors.
His gentle smile cased me a little, but the thought of returning to Central City by nightfall dragged me down again.
Kirby’s shadow was like a curse I could never escape.
To spare myself the trouble, I decided not to go
back.
I changed into a simple casual outfit, pulled a hat low over my face, and slipped out alone to wander the streets.
No one was with me now. Liam was busy with Pack matters, and my friends weren’t here either.
A rare bit of personal time.
The twilight sky darkened, fading from washed blue to deep indigo, and finally sank into night.
A calm autumn breeze rustled the trees, cool and crisp.
I walked through a small park, pine resin pheromones drifting in the wind, scanning the area with cautious eyes.
A few scattered werewolves strolled about. I kept my head down, avoiding unnecessary attention.
When I reached the mall, the luxury storefronts caught my eye, stirring an itch in my chest.
Without hesitation, I went in and happily began shopping.
The sales clerks, seeing me dressed down with a hat, didn’t recognize me. But the moment 1 swiped my card, they froze, wide–eyed and gawking.
“This one… and that one too. Wrap them up,” I said calmly, while they scrambled around me in a frenzy.
They nearly dragged me deeper into the store, eager to keep me shopping.
I bought plenty, had everything sent straight to the hotel, and kept only the receipts tucked casually in my pocket. Then I headed upstairs.
Suddenly, a cluster of black–clad gammas appeared ahead, moving quickly.

I froze, alarm bells ringing, my pheromones flaring sharp and defensive as I stepped back.
Asphodel bristled instantly, ready to shift at a moment’s notice.
But they ran right past me, without a glance.
Not here for me.
Good. I let out a breath and continued on.
A little weary, I found a rest area up ahead, not too crowded. In the center stood a fine grand piano.
I paused, then sat down.
My hand touched the keys, and an itch stirred inside me.
I struck a few notes. The sound was crisp, clear—such a beautiful instrument.
Almost without thinking, I began to play. The notes strung themselves into a bright, simple melody, lighthearted and fresh, a perfect fit for my relaxed mood after shopping.
It had been so long since I felt this free. My fingers danced over the keys, carrying me back to carefree days.
I was so lost in the music that I didn’t notice when someone sat beside me.
Not until another pair of hands joined on the keyboard, weaving into my melody with light, lively notes. I started slightly and turned my head.
Adler’s refined face was there, his eyes gleaming with a clear, warm smile.
His fingers moved deftly, blending with mine in perfect harmony. The four–hand duet sparkled with effortless rhythm, as if we had rehearsed it countless times. The music lifted and danced, full of life, making it impossible not to feel at ease.
I smiled. His technique was masterful.
In that moment, there was nothing between us but the shared joy of the piano and the song.
It felt like stepping into a radiant summer day, reliving the happiest of times.
The rush of joy engulfed me, flooding me with light.
When the piece ended, my smile faded slowly.
