Rania walked a step back behind Elder Gayle. Currently, they were walking in the garden, the same garden that Rania had been staring at from her window in her bedroom.
This was the first time she was here, since she always stayed inside, and didn’t explore much of the palace. Declan’s words kept ringing in her ears that she was not allowed to roam around the area.
Rania found this garden was refreshing. The sweet smell of the blooming flowers made her felt good, if only she was not very anxious with whatever the elder was going to tell her, it would be perfect.
There were no words that had been said, ever since they walked in the garden, and Rania didn’t know how to open the conversation when it was him, who wanted to talk with her.
Finally, they walked toward a bench, under a wisteria tree. This tree had captured Rania’s attention ever since she saw it. She wanted to look at it closer, but since she didn’t want to go outside, she could only stare at it from afar.
“You are the king’s mate, right?” Elder Gayle said. He was panting slightly because they were walking a little bit long for his liking. He was not young anymore.
“Yes. Is there anything, I can help you with?” Rania asked in a small voice.
The elder smiled softly, and then looked at her gently, which made Rania felt a little bit uncomfortable. She was trying to figure out what she wanted from her.
She wondered if he was part of the Movement, and he wanted to talk about that with her.
“You are beautiful, my lady, and I think you can tame the king’s madness pretty well.”
“Thank you, but I don’t think I have done something noticeable about it.” She remembered not long ago the king had killed a warrior, who lied about Killian’s visit, even though he was still not clear, and had no evidence that he was telling a lie, neither he believed her.
She didn’t think she had achieved something in that department.
“I know this is not something that you will recognize immediately.” Elder Gayle seemed to understand what Rania was thinking, and he reassured her that he was not trying to sugarcoat his words. “The king has been in a good mood lately, and it’s because he is in a good term with you.”
Rania didn’t know how Maximus acted out there, but it was right that they were currently in a good term. Therefore, she said nothing to respond to that and wait for the elder to continue.
“I know it must be hard for you when you have to keep up with his cruel side, but Maximus was not like that. He was used to be a great kid.” Elder Gayle stared at the distance, as if he was recollecting a far away memories. “He was a sweet and curious boy, before his father ruined his innocent, and left him a deep scar.”
Rania didn’t know where this conversation would go, but she listened to him nonetheless, as the elder recalled a moment or two when he met Maximus for the first time, he was three years old, a shy boy, who hid behind his mother’s leg when he met other people.

“I recognized your necklace and earing.” Elder Gayle nodded at her necklace and earing that Maximus gave to her a few days ago before they went out in public for the first time.
She liked them, thus she didn’t take them off, and Maximus seemed please with her decision. More so, the necklace and the earing were on the small size, it didn’t catch your attention if you didn’t see it closely.
“The king gave them to me,” Rania replied, she touched her earing.
“Of course, he did.” Elder Gayle nodded, he chuckled a little. “He loved his mother, unfortunately the late queen died, an unexpected dead.” His smile disappeared, and his eyes clouded with sadness. “That’s when the time the previous king went insane.”

Eiten had told her that something broke inside Maximus when he lost Ella. When he had to witness her dead before his eyes, and he couldn’t do anything about it. The helplessness, and the hopelessness that made you sick to your stomach.
