Rania was not sure what happened with her, but she was had been vomiting every morning. Her stomach would churn, and her throat was so dry.
She had stopped taking the poison, but then probably it was too late, since she already felt the effect of it.
“What’s wrong?” Rania splashed water to her pale face. Her cheeks were hollow, as if she had not yet eaten anything for a few days.
Maximus said it before he fell asleep the previous night that he would take her to the Bloody Moon pack today, and she didn’t know what they were going to do there.
She felt dizzy, her stomach was still churning, but after she stood there for a while, the feeling gradually faded.
It was still dark out there when Rania came out of the bathroom, and Maximus was still sleeping. She stood there, at the door of the bathroom, staring at the sleeping king.
From the corner of her eyes, she could see the knife that she used to peel off fruits, and an impulsive thought flashed in her mind.
What if she took the knife and killed him right there and then. Would it help? What she would do then? Running away? But, where? Where she could go, which was safe for her?
If she followed what the Movement told her to do, and the king died, she still had to run away again. Because she was not going to let herself be back in the clutch of Caden.
Slowly, Rania approached the bed. She sat at the edge of it, and stared at Maximus’s sleeping face. She wondered, whether she could convince him to stop the war.
Could she change him for the better? Stop his madness from killing people out of instinct? Maximus hurt her, but he didn’t seem to have any intention to kill her. At least, not yet.
But, Elder Gayle believed she could do something about the king’s inclination for murder. Would she be able to do that?
Rania didn’t know how long she was sitting there, staring at the king like a creep, with thousand of thoughts jumbled up
in her mind.
And when the first ray of sun filtered through the room from the window, Rania made up her mind; she was going to give it a try, she would see whether there was a way to stop the war without killing Maximus.
Probably because of the sunlight, or it might be because the way Rania stared at him for so long, but the king stirred in his sleep, and he looked at the empty spot next to him.
The sleepiness in his eyes disappeared almost immediately, as he was still unaware that Rania was sitting on the edge of the bed.
He stood up abruptly, and was about to go out of the bed when he caught her there.

“You are awake,” he said in his hoarse voice. He rubbed his face roughly, and Rania went over to him, she sat so close, and then craned her neck to kiss his lips.
“Good morning,” Rania said, which surprised Maximus because he didn’t expect to be kissed all of sudden. It was not that he was against it, but Rania had never initiated it before.
For a moment, Maximus was at lost on what he had to do, or what to say, but then he cupped her face, and leaned over to kiss her.
“Good morning,” he said against her lips. He kissed her ever so gently, something that he didn’t think he was capable of doing.
However, the kiss taste different, because he didn’t feel that mint taste from her lips.
