Charlotte frowned. Noah missed her?
A bitter, hollow laugh slipped from her lips. “He probably just wants me in hell as soon as possible.”
Darren heard the sarcasm in her voice, his knuckles cracking as he clenched his fists.
“Charlotte, Noah has lost his memory. This is your last chance to make things right. Miss it, and you’ll never hear him call you ‘Mom’ again—not for the rest of your life.”
That word—“Mom”—stabbed deep, sharp as a needle in Charlotte’s chest.
She’d ached for that call, dreamt of it night after night, only to see Noah turn to Xena during her kidnapping, only to be lured by Noah himself into a trap wired with explosives...
After all that, she’d long given up hoping for anything at all.
Darren’s expression was icy as he dialed the hospital’s video line. “Put my son on,” he ordered.
Then, striding over to Charlotte, he shoved the phone into her hand, voice hard as granite. “You have one chance. Either sign the papers with him, or come with me.”
Charlotte’s eyes flickered. She looked down at the screen.
Noah sat on the hospital bed, a bandage wrapped around his head, his small frame dwarfed by the white sheets. The moment he spotted her on the screen, his face lit up, pure joy shining in his eyes.
“Mama...”
“Mama, I missed you. I love when we go to the riverside to collect pebbles. Will you take me again, just like last time?”
That one word—“Mama”—echoed through the screen, making Charlotte’s rigid face tremble despite herself.
Collecting pebbles by the river?
The last time she’d done that, it was with Ryan, not Noah.
Suddenly, she realized it was true—Noah really had lost his memory. His mind must have twisted the past.
If not for that, the only words she’d hear from him now would be:
“Charlotte, I hate you.”
“Charlotte, get out!”
