He hung up and looked back at her, his words carrying an unyielding weight. “Noah’s being released.”

Charlotte stayed silent, her eyes lowered, as if the news meant nothing.

Darren loosened his tie, frustration simmering. “Charlotte, I’m giving you a chance to start over.”

He leaned forward, folding his hands on the table, exuding all the arrogance of someone used to being in control. “Apologize to me now. And file for divorce from Bradley. For Noah’s sake, I’ll arrange for your bail.”

It was as generous an offer as he could muster.

But Charlotte’s eyes remained empty, her voice barely above a whisper. “That won’t be necessary.”

“Charlotte! Will you ever stop?”

Darren shot to his feet, palms flat on the table, looming over her with barely contained fury and a flicker of confusion he failed to recognize in himself.

“I’m warning you—if you’re convicted, you’ll be behind bars for at least three years!”
