Charlotte’s heart clenched. Were these women sent by Darren?
Did he really intend to force her into submission, to make her confess through violence?
She braced herself and struggled to her feet, but her body had already reached its limit; even standing upright was a challenge.
“Hold her down!”
At the order, two women lunged at her.
In seconds, Charlotte was pinned hard to the cold concrete floor, her cheek pressed against the ground.
The musty air filled her nose as one of the women stomped down viciously on her wrist.
A sickening crack echoed through the cell.
Pain exploded through every nerve in her body, and in that blinding agony, Charlotte understood.
If she could still feel pain like this, it meant the fusion between the super chip and her body was almost complete. Her life was nearly spent.
Another woman drove her heel into Charlotte’s already fractured wrist.
Charlotte gritted her teeth, a muffled groan escaping as she bit down on her lip until she tasted blood.
She didn’t make a sound until the feeling in her hand faded away, and then a hoarse, bitter laugh broke from her throat.
If not for this, she would be sitting at her computer right now, carrying out the final steps of her self-rescue plan.
But in the end, it was Darren who had closed off her last escape route.
“Darren, may we never meet again in this life. And in the next…”
“In the next, let’s not meet either…”
The woman in charge caught the faint muttering but couldn’t make out what Charlotte was saying.
All she saw was sweat pouring down Charlotte’s pale forehead, which only made the smirk on her own lips grow more twisted.
