Lena’s voice rang out, sharp and domineering. “Charlotte, let me make this clear: you’re going to the hospital today whether you like it or not! If anything happens to Noah, I swear I’ll never let you live it down!”
Charlotte kept her grip on her knife and fork, turning to Ryan with a gentle smile. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. Mommy will handle this.”
Ryan nodded obediently and quietly slipped away to the side.
Once Ryan was out of earshot, Charlotte slowly lifted her gaze and met Lena’s eyes head-on.
“After I gave birth, when I was weak and vulnerable, who was it that locked me away in that clinic for a whole year? Who cut off all contact between me and Noah? Who whispered poison in his ear day after day, making him believe his own mother abandoned him?”
“Lena, back then, did it ever cross your mind that you’d end up facing me like this?”
The color drained from Lena’s face, her lips twitching with outrage. “You dare bring up the past? Clearly I didn’t teach you enough of a lesson then, or you wouldn’t dare speak to me like this now!”
She advanced, step by step, raising her hand in the same threatening gesture she’d used so many times back at the old Harrington estate.
Charlotte’s calm voice held a warning. “Hit me, and you’ll regret it.”
Lena’s eyes flashed with disdain. She’s about to get slapped, and she’s worried about my hand? Some things never change—Charlotte might put on a brave face, but deep down she’s still that weak, spineless woman.
Ignoring the warning, Lena sneered, “This is your last chance, Charlotte. Are you going to see Noah, or not?”
Charlotte remained silent, her expression unreadable.
Lena’s eyes narrowed. “Fine. You brought this on yourself.”
She swung her hand, aiming a vicious slap at Charlotte’s cheek.
But before she could make contact, a glint of silver flashed in the air. Charlotte had snatched up her fork and, with terrifying precision, drove it straight into the palm of Lena’s descending hand.
The tines pierced deep—at least half an inch.
Lena’s scream echoed through the room.
