As he spoke, Bradley reached over and ruffled Ryan’s hair, his voice gentle. “How about this—let me make it up to you. What do you say I take you downtown to see the lantern festival tonight?”
Ryan’s eyes lit up instantly. He nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, please!”
Charlotte saw how much Ryan wanted to go, so she didn’t object.
As night fell, the old downtown streets of Astra were transformed into a wonderland, dazzling with all kinds of glowing lanterns.
Ryan pointed excitedly at one cluster of lanterns. “Mom, look! That’s the Monkey King!”
“Dad, is that Hercules?”
The little boy was utterly fascinated by these cartoon heroes, eagerly introducing each one he recognized to Charlotte and Bradley as they walked along.
Suddenly, they passed by an event booth called “Happy Family Haven.”
The sign explained that only families of three or more could join, and the winning team would be decided through a series of games.
Ryan tugged on Charlotte’s sleeve, looking up at her with hopeful eyes. “Mom…”
Charlotte smiled. “You want to play?”
Ryan nodded without a moment’s hesitation. Bradley chimed in, “Let’s do it. We’ve got time.”
To their surprise, the three of them worked together seamlessly.
During the word-guessing game, one look from Bradley was all Charlotte needed to guess the answer he had in mind; when it came to the puzzle challenge, Charlotte always spotted the missing piece, and Bradley fitted everything together perfectly.
They breezed through each round, finally taking first place.
Afterward, each of them received a prize—a braided red bracelet symbolizing peace and good fortune, with a tiny wooden charm hanging from it.
Bradley eyed the bracelet in his hand, brow furrowing slightly.
Charlotte knew these intricate red cords weren’t exactly common in Avalor. She offered, “Need a hand?”
He seemed caught off guard for a moment, then held out his wrist, passing her the bracelet.
She took it, deftly separating the strands and wrapping the cord around his wrist, her head bowed in concentration. In no time, she’d tied a tidy knot.
Their skin brushed occasionally, a quiet warmth spreading between them in those fleeting touches.
“All set,” Charlotte said with a smile.
