“The front desk gave it to me. It’s too dangerous for you to stay alone—I can’t relax.”
Darren said this as he turned away. “I’ll run you a bath.”
“Wait!”
Charlotte called after him, but he was gone in a flash, his tall figure vanishing into the bathroom like he was making an escape.
Charlotte immediately picked up the phone and dialed the front desk. At a five-star hotel, even the receptionists were trained to be courteous; the woman on the line apologized, her tone formal and polite:
“I’m so sorry, ma’am, but all our rooms are fully booked tonight. The gentleman said he was your husband. He even showed us your marriage certificate, and we verified both your IDs and photos before completing the check-in.”
“Marriage certificate?”
Charlotte’s eyes widened. That thing was just a worthless scrap from years ago.
She and Darren had dissolved their marriage under the pretense of her death. According to the law, the certificate wasn’t required for annulment; the relationship ended automatically.
She never imagined Darren would keep that useless piece of paper, let alone brandish it to claim he was still her husband.
Just as her frustration was about to boil over, she heard—
“Charlotte, your bath’s ready!”
Darren reappeared, his bangs damp and clinging to his forehead. The collar of his black dress shirt gaped open, showing off a sharp collarbone. The half-wet shirt stuck to his body, hinting at the powerful lines of broad shoulders and a narrow waist beneath. He looked like he was carved from power itself.
Charlotte swallowed hard. Was he getting himself wet on purpose?
She frowned, maneuvering her wheelchair toward the bathroom door, intending to stand on her own once she got there.
These days, as long as she held onto the wall, she could manage a shaky walk. A shower wasn’t supposed to be a big deal.
But the moment she started moving, Darren leaned over and pressed the off switch. Before she could protest, he scooped her up into his arms without so much as a warning.
