Suddenly, a large hand seized hers and pressed it firmly against his solid chest.
His heartbeat pounded fiercely beneath her palm, the rhythm strong and insistent. Darren’s deep, magnetic voice curled around her ear. “Well? How does it feel?”
He leaned in, a glint of mischief in his eyes. “I remember that time you mistook me for a male model. You seemed to like touching me right here.”
Darren’s entire body drew closer.
Heat surged through him, pooling with electrifying intensity low in his abdomen. His voice dropped, rougher now, “Wanna try your luck somewhere else?”
Before he could finish, Charlotte’s fist shot up and smashed into his prominent nose. A spurt of blood immediately stained his skin.
Darren clutched his nose, hissing through the pain. “Charlotte, that was brutal…”
Charlotte bit her lip, glaring at him. “If you don’t get out right now, you’ll be showing up to the World Jade Expo tomorrow looking like you lost a bar fight in Frostaheim.”
She pulled her hand back in warning.
Darren grinned despite the blood, licking his lips and smothering the fire in his eyes. “Call me if you need anything. I’ll be outside.”
Once the bathroom door closed and she heard his footsteps fade, Charlotte let out a huge sigh of relief.
She must be losing her mind. For a split second, she’d actually wanted to see if his abs were as hard as they looked.
With a groan, she dunked her entire face in the sink, hoping the cold water would cool her down.
After her shower, she crawled into bed, pulled the covers up to her chin, and shut her eyes tight.
When she noticed Darren was obediently camped out on the sofa, her guard finally began to drop.
Tomorrow’s World Jade Expo was bound to be a storm.
She forced herself to fall asleep, determined to save up her strength.
But as the night deepened and the world grew silent, Charlotte couldn’t find true rest.
Nightmares twisted through her dreams—her mother’s tragic death, the bitter cold of a remote cabin in the far north. She tossed and turned, her brow furrowed even in sleep.
In the haze between dreams and waking, she suddenly felt the mattress dip beneath someone’s weight, and the warmth of a body drawing close.
