She wore a deep crimson silk nightgown, the delicate fabric hugging her figure as she twirled a blood-red ruby ring between her fingers, letting its facets catch the lamplight. Every gesture radiated elegance and power, but her eyelids flickered now and then, betraying a sense of unease, as if she sensed something unexpected was about to happen at today’s World Jade Expo.
On the vanity lay a phone, its screen alive with a subordinate’s report.
“The Griffith family’s roots are in Heston.”
Gladys pressed the phone to her ear. “Are you sure it’s the CEO of the Harrington Group? Our families have never done business together. Why would they suddenly show up at the World Jade Expo?”
Her voice was laced with suspicion and surprise.
In the corner, a young woman stood as still and lovely as a porcelain vase, her face hidden behind an ornate floral mask. Every line of her body was graceful, her posture flawless. At the mention of the Harrington Group’s CEO, she trembled ever so slightly.
The voice on the phone replied, “Ma’am, the head of the Frostaheim branch of the Harrington Group notified us personally. There’s no mistake.”
“Word is out that you’ll officially inherit the title of head of the Griffith family at the Expo. Mr. Harrington’s traveled all this way to pay his respects—he wants to congratulate you in person.”
Gladys smiled, satisfied. She set down the ruby ring and slipped a sapphire one onto her finger instead. Then, as if remembering something, she frowned sharply. “And Cedric? That woman—have they been dealt with?”
“Rest assured, ma’am. Cedric was hit by a heavy truck—killed on the spot.”
“As for the woman who bears such a striking resemblance to your daughter, I sent our best assassin. By now, she should be nothing but a memory. Nothing will stand in the way of you becoming the new family head today.”
Gladys’ expression relaxed. “Excellent. Better to be safe than sorry.”
She hung up, her gaze suddenly falling on the silent flower maid in the corner.
