Delete My Love for You novel Chapter 26

She and Herbert were the only survivors. Everyone else perished in the disaster—including the director. The death toll reached 373.

Every time Charlotte thought about it, sorrow would well up inside her.

Noticing the shadow on her face, Herbert didn’t push any further. Instead, he sent a few texts on his phone and spoke gently, “Charlotte, don’t dwell on the past. Get some rest. Someone will be by in ten minutes to help tidy up the place, so don’t overexert yourself. As for the surgery the day after tomorrow…”

He paused, his tone deepening. “If you have second thoughts, just tell me. We can always look for another volunteer.”

“Mr. Nelson, I won’t change my mind,” Charlotte replied, her resolve unshakable. “This chip carries ten years of our lab’s dreams. If it works, it will be as if all our hard-won knowledge can be directly transferred into the human mind. That would mark a huge milestone for science.”

“If I get to witness this miracle myself, it’s the best way I can honor the past decade of our work. And if I fail—well, giving my all for science is a responsibility I’m willing to bear.”

Herbert nodded. “All right, then. Let’s give it our best, together.”

After he left, the door clicked shut behind him.

Suddenly remembering something, Charlotte began rummaging through drawers for the black onyx pendant Darren had given her twelve years ago.

She searched the drawers, the corners, every cabinet—nothing. Not only was the pendant gone, but her cheap bracelets from street fairs and even the hair clip the orphanage director once gave her had vanished too.

She recalled that Darren had once insisted on collecting all her personal jewelry. Apparently, he hadn’t even spared her old apartment.

Anything valuable and even the trinkets that weren’t—he’d handed them all over to Xena.

So this was fate.

Fate had decided that from now on, there would be nothing left in her life tied to Darren.

When the cleaning crew Herbert had arranged finally arrived, Charlotte ignored the commotion, focusing solely on her computer as she checked the chip’s data for the upcoming surgery.

“Mr. Harrington? What are you doing here?”

Don’t tell me he’s changed his mind and wants these things back?

As anxiety gnawed at her, the guards began rifling through her heap of jewelry. One of them finally fished out the black onyx pendant and handed it to Darren.

Darren closed his fingers around the stone, his expression shifting instantly.

He turned a cold stare on Xena, his voice barely steady. “Where did you get this pendant?”

Xena froze, anxiety spiking. “Isn’t it—the one you took from Charlotte and gave to me?”

Darren’s expression darkened. “What did you say? This pendant… belonged to Charlotte?”
