The smile faded from Mr. Nathan Harrington’s face. He studied Darren seriously, sensing the gravity in his grandson’s eyes.

Darren continued, “The odds aren’t even fifty-fifty. If I fail, I hope you’ll forgive me for not being there to take care of you in your old age.”

With that, Darren dropped to his knees before his grandfather.

Nathan waved his hand, his tone open and kind, though a faint tremor betrayed the emotion he tried to hide.

Darren’s throat tightened. He forced down the surge of emotions, then bowed his head three times, his forehead touching the floor.

After the last bow, he stood and handed his grandfather a copy of his will.

“I’ve given half my shares in the Harrington Group to Charlotte. It’s already notarized, but I’m afraid my oldest sister might refuse to accept it. If she gives Charlotte any trouble, I’ll need you to step in…”

“I understand.”

Nathan took the will, looking into his grandson’s calm eyes, and said nothing more.

It wasn’t until Darren had left that the old man murmured softly, “My dear, our grandson is as stubborn as ever. If he fails and you see him on the other side… please watch over him.”
