During the surgery, Darren’s mind drifted back to a crowded underground club from years ago.

The air was thick with the stench of cheap cigarettes and sweat. All around, a chorus of harsh, jeering voices battered his ears:

What chilled Darren most was that this ring of depravity, planted on foreign soil, was run almost entirely by people from Heston—his own countrymen, taking pleasure in the suffering of their own.

Tears streamed down the girl’s face, each one ignored. No one cared about her terror. No one cared that she was in pain.
