Delete My Love for You novel Chapter 52

Herbert rubbed the marks on his neck where he’d been grabbed, his face pale as a sheet.

Darren—he clearly had the wrong idea.

The doors to the ICU swung open.

A hospital bed was wheeled out, and the attending physician asked, “Who here is family?”

Herbert was about to speak when Darren cut him off. “She doesn’t have any family here. I’m her employer. Just tell me what’s going on.”

The doctor replied, “We managed to remove the bullet. She’s out of immediate danger, but there’s something unusual…”

“What’s unusual?” Darren pressed, his voice sharp.

Suddenly, Herbert stepped forward. “Doctor, I’m Professor Herbert from the National Research Center. The patient is my girlfriend.”

The doctor froze mid-sentence.

Someone with national security clearance—their medical situation was strictly confidential…

He quickly backtracked, stammering, “Ah, in that case, there’s nothing to worry about. She just needs a few days in recovery and she’ll be fine.”

A nurse wheeled Charlotte’s bed out.

Darren glanced down at her, Herbert's words echoing in his mind—“my girlfriend.” Whatever guilt he’d felt about Xena getting her hurt vanished instantly.

He turned, fixing Herbert with a hard stare. “Don’t think I didn’t catch that little code between you and the doctor. Maybe he’s afraid to say things out loud, but I’m not. I’ll find out the truth.”

Charlotte wasn’t just a fencing champion. What was even more bizarre was how she’d single-handedly taken down a full-grown guard dog, and from ten meters away, sprinted over to block a bullet for him.

What kind of woman had that kind of strength and speed?

What if Herbert had been experimenting on her?

Darren’s face darkened. “I’m going to get to the bottom of whatever’s going on between you and Charlotte. Let’s see how long you keep that fancy title of yours, Professor.”

Herbert helped Charlotte sit up, his face grave. “Charlotte, Darren is probably going to start investigating you. I don’t think we’ll be able to keep the chip a secret for much longer.”

Charlotte’s lips were pale, her reply barely more than a whisper. “Then let’s finish the experimental data before he finds out. It’s time to activate the chip’s third protocol.”

The third task—emotional adaptation. Dating.

On the day Charlotte was discharged, Herbert drove her back to the Harrington estate to resume work.

As she got out of the car, Herbert pulled a massive bouquet of red roses from the trunk—nine hundred and ninety-nine blooms, cradled in his arms. He smiled gently as he offered them to her.

Charlotte took the flowers, lowering her head to inhale their fragrance. Just then, Herbert leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.

Ten yards away, Darren stood at the study’s picture window, phone in hand.

He couldn’t have timed it worse—he saw the entire scene.

His brow furrowed sharply, tension flickering across his face.
