Charlotte stepped into the villa’s living room and nearly collided with Darren, who was coming down the stairs.
“Mr. Harrington, I’m here to resume my position.”
He didn’t even glance up as he took a seat on the sofa, a thick stack of documents in his hand. “Lottie, tell me—why did you start learning martial arts at the age of three? Care to share your reason?”
Charlotte paused for a moment.
She remembered what Herbert had told her at the hospital: “Lottie, our tech team has taken care of all your records.”
“Even if Darren looks into you, all he’ll find is a pile of useless information.”
So, this must be the fake background Herbert’s people had created for her.
She replied calmly, “I was an ugly kid, so I learned to fight. Had to protect myself.”
“Ugly?” Darren let out a short laugh. “Yet you still managed to turn Mr. Nelson’s head, didn’t you?”
Charlotte frowned, sensing he wasn’t finished.
Sure enough, his tone cooled, laced with barbs. “Six years ago, you were with Mr. Nelson, caught cheating on him and dumped by your fiancé? Didn’t expect you had such a wild side.”
Charlotte’s breath stalled for a second.
It took her a moment to regain her composure.
Mr. Nelson must have spread these rumors, hoping Darren would fire her. After all, the Harrington family didn’t hire just anyone to be their bodyguard.
She swallowed, forcing herself to stay poised. “You’re absolutely right, Mr. Harrington. I’m ugly, untrustworthy, a two-timer—can’t seem to keep my heart in one place…”
Bang!
Darren suddenly slammed the stack of papers down onto the table.
Charlotte waited a beat before continuing, “If you can’t stand someone like me working for your family, just say the word. I’ll leave right now.”
A slow, inscrutable smile appeared on Darren’s lips. “You’re the favorite of the top-tier instructor in the country. Someone that talented? Why on earth would I let you go?”
The housekeeper stepped forward. “Lottie, give me the flowers. I’ll put them in your room.”
Before she could finish, Darren’s voice rang out, sharp with warning. “No flowers anywhere in the house!”
The housekeeper hesitated, lost for words.
Charlotte stepped in to smooth things over. “I’ll toss them on my way out. Next time, I’ll ask my boyfriend to send a different kind of gift.”
Darren finally seemed satisfied and headed out of the villa.
Charlotte followed after him.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the Astra Orphan Asylum. The fundraiser was crowded, buzzing with people.
Xena stood in a simple, elegant dress, a polite smile on her face as she spoke to a reporter.
Right then, Herbert, in front of the cameras, asked, “Ms. Lancaster, I’ve just learned you grew up here at the Astra Orphan Asylum, but I don’t remember ever seeing you. Would you mind sharing your most vivid memories of the place? Maybe you can help me fill in the gaps.”
