At dawn, Charlotte was jolted awake by heavy, hurried footsteps pounding down the hallway.
“Grandpa? What are you doing here?”
Darren’s deep voice drifted through the door, and Charlotte shot upright in bed.
It was Mr. Nathan Harrington.
Outside, a raspy voice sounded from the other side of the door. “I came to see how my dear grandson has been living it up ever since Charlotte left us.”
Charlotte’s throat tightened at the sound of that all-too-familiar voice.
Quietly, she slipped out of bed and eased the door open just a crack.
In the living room, Mr. Nathan Harrington sat rigidly in the main seat on the sofa, his expression forbidding. Behind him stood the Harrington family’s longtime butler and a row of imposing bodyguards.
Nathan cast a cold glance at Darren. “Did you send someone to mess with Charlotte’s ashes? What did you find out?”
Darren, seated across from Nathan, kept his tone calm and measured. “Grandpa, this has nothing to do with the family. There’s no need for you to get involved.”
A thunderous crack rang out as Nathan slammed his dragon-headed cane against the floor.
“Don’t play games with me! Is the report true or not? Those weren’t Charlotte’s ashes at all—are you telling me she’s still alive?”
Darren’s gaze flicked to the old butler behind Nathan. “The matter isn’t settled yet. Who’s been gossiping to you before the investigation is complete?”
“Don’t you dare threaten my people!”
Nathan’s fury erupted. “They’re loyal—unlike you, you ungrateful grandson! And what about that bodyguard I mistook for Charlotte last time? Where is she?”
Darren’s eyes turned icy. “Grandpa, why are you asking about her?”
Nathan’s jaw tightened. “I trust my instincts. If Charlotte isn’t dead, then odds are, that girl is my Charlotte.”
“Grandpa, you’re being utterly unreasonable. There’s no way she’s Charlotte!”
He glared at Darren. “And you! If I hadn’t come here myself today, were you planning to hide the truth about Charlotte from me forever?”
Xena tried to keep her voice light as she explained, “Grandpa, if my sister is truly alive, we would all be thrilled. But nothing is clear yet, and Mr. Harrington is only worried that the higher your hopes, the harder the fall if it isn’t true…”
“Enough! I’m talking to my grandson. Who said you could interrupt?”
“I…”
Xena choked on her words.
Nathan’s face grew even colder. “You should be grateful you’re not officially part of this family yet. If you were, by our house rules, you’d get twenty lashes for speaking out of turn!”
Xena fell silent, instinctively taking two steps back.
Darren stepped in front of her protectively and spoke in a low voice, “Xena, take Noah to school now.”
