“Grandpa gave it willingly—how is that a scam?”
Charlotte’s words had barely faded when Nathan Harrington chimed in, “That’s right. I gave it to her of my own accord.”
A flash of cold fury flickered in Darren’s eyes.
He couldn’t believe it—was this Lottie really that greedy?
His gaze shifted to Nathan, voice low and simmering with anger. “Grandpa, you’re being reckless!”
Nathan just sighed. “No, Darren. I’m not the one who’s blind here. You are.”
“Enough!”
Darren didn’t want to argue about Nathan recognizing his granddaughter anymore. He turned on Charlotte, voice issuing a final ultimatum. “I’ll ask you one last time. The answer you owe me—are you giving it to me, or not?”
If she refused, he could have Herbert blacklisted from the entire research community in a heartbeat.
Charlotte understood the threat. She turned to Nathan and said gently, “Grandpa, please go back to the estate and get some rest. Once I’ve settled things here, I’ll come find you.”
Nathan lingered, eyes dark with worry and reluctance.
It was a long moment before he finally said, “Alright, Charlotte. Don’t keep me waiting for nothing. If anything happens, call the estate immediately.”
He gestured to the butler, who stepped forward to help guide him out.
Charlotte watched the old man’s retreating figure, whispering inwardly, “I’m sorry, Grandpa.”
Once Nathan had disappeared from sight, she composed herself and turned to Darren. “Mr. Harrington, I’ve never forgotten my promise. I’ll take you to her now.”
“No!”
Xena hurried forward, grabbing Darren’s arm, her voice urgent. “Please, Darren, don’t trust this woman. She’s manipulative—she even had surgery to look like your ex-wife, and now she’s tricked Grandpa into giving her shares. Don’t go with her—”
Darren’s eyes narrowed. He pulled Xena close, soothing her with a gentle pat. “Xena, I just need answers. That’s all.”
“Why do you need the truth? Are you still hung up on Charlotte?”
“No!”
Darren’s reply was sharp and final. “Charlotte means nothing to me. She didn’t two years ago, and she doesn’t now.”
Every word landed like a blade in Charlotte’s heart.
But her face remained unreadable.
She couldn’t feel the pain anymore.
A little ways off, Xena looked anxiously at Darren. “Mr. Harrington, Noah just lost control because he saw the one person he hates most. That’s all.”
Darren’s eyes darkened.
“Xena, take care of him for me. I’ll be back soon.”
He didn’t wait for her reply. He led Charlotte out the door.
Both climbed into his Rolls-Royce.
As the car started, Darren loosened his tie and shot her a warning. “It would take one forged medical record, and Nathan’s promise to give you those shares would be worthless. You’d better think hard about whose side you should really be on.”
Charlotte murmured, “I once thought about relying on you. But you never let me, did you?”
A look of frustration flickered in Darren’s eyes.
Then, without warning, he reached out and grabbed her by the back of the neck, yanking her close, his breath icy. “Did you really think wearing that fake face would be enough to seduce me?”
Charlotte met his gaze, calm and unblinking. “Well? Did it work?”
