Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 116

Emmy gripped the crystal bracelet on her wrist, her fingers going white.

James had disappeared. For days. No calls, no texts, not even a hint he’d seen any of her desperate messages. She’d even posted online hoping to get his attention, but nothing worked.

She was running out of options. And the company couldn’t wait forever.

With a shaky breath, Emmy told herself to get it together. She had no choice but to go find him herself at the South Bay Fire Station.

The summer heat was brutal. The second she stepped out of her office building, a wall of hot air hit her like a slap. Today was one of those days where it felt like the sun was trying to melt the pavement. The fire station was just on the other side of the fence, but by the time she reached the gate, her head was spinning.

She forced a smile for the guard at the entrance. “Hi, I’m looking for James.”

The guard recognized her right away—James’s wife. He nodded quickly. “Of course, ma’am. Give me a second, I’ll check.”

He called inside, had a quick conversation, then turned back to her with a look of apology. “Ms. Lincoln, James is leading a drill. He asked if you could wait out here for a bit.”

Emmy nodded and moved into what little shade she could find under a nearby tree. But the sun was relentless, the heat coming from every direction. The thin shade barely made a difference.

She couldn’t help but wonder how James managed to do his job in all that heavy gear in this heat. Was he okay? Was he risking heatstroke?

As she worried about him, her own body started to give out. Dizziness rushed over her. She stumbled back, bumping against the wall just in time to catch herself. Her stomach churned. She crouched down, fighting the urge to throw up.

She was just about to lose the battle when the guard’s voice rang out, excited. “James!”

Emmy’s head snapped up. She pushed herself to her feet, knees wobbling.

James walked toward her through the blazing sun, wearing his navy training uniform. Sweat had soaked through the fabric, making it cling to his broad shoulders and defined muscles.

Emmy hurried over to him, her voice coming out shaky and desperate, even though she tried to keep it together. “James, you’re finally here.”
