The old doctor finished his checkup, his tone serious. “Good thing you brought her in when you did. She’s in pretty rough shape. It’s nearly a hundred and four degrees outside. Any later and she would’ve had heatstroke, and that can kill.”
He glanced at Emmy. “I’m going to give you a shot to bring your fever down.”
Even half-conscious, Emmy flinched away from the idea, mumbling, “No shot… I can just drink that herbal stuff…”
“Nope.” The doctor shook his head. “You’re burning up at a hundred and four. Only a shot is fast enough. If we wait, you could start seizing.”
He started prepping the injection, then looked at James. “Give her some fever medicine first.”
James gently lifted Emmy, letting her lean against his chest, and coaxed her to swallow the pills.
The doctor came back with the syringe, paused, and looked at James. “You want to do it?”
James didn’t answer.
The doctor gave him a side-eye. “Come on, she’s your wife, not a stranger. Besides, you learned first aid from me, and your hands are steadier than half the nurses here. If I do it and she wakes up, it’ll just be awkward. You do it.”
He shoved the syringe and cotton ball into James’s hands and strolled out, leaving them alone.
Suddenly, it was just the two of them, the room quiet except for the hum of the AC.
James hesitated for only a moment before he gently rolled Emmy onto her stomach on the cot.
Her dress slid up, showing black shorts that hugged the curve of her hips.
James’s throat tightened. His hands hovered at her waistband for a second before he pulled the shorts down just enough to reveal a stretch of pale skin.
He dabbed the alcohol, then pressed the needle in.
Emmy whimpered softly, trying to squirm away. James held her legs steady with his free hand.
