Emmy’s cheeks flared hot, blushing all the way to her ears and even coloring her pale neck with a rosy tint.

James stared, eyebrows knitting tighter as he took in how red she was. “Are you running a fever again?”

He reached out with his big hand, aiming for her forehead.

“No!” Emmy jerked back like a startled rabbit, dodging him.

She kept her gaze glued to the floor, barely above a whisper. “I just… need to use the bathroom.”

James nodded, pulling his hand back, but instinctively reached out again to steady her.

Emmy didn’t notice. She tossed off the thin blanket, hopped out of bed, and headed straight for the door.

His hand caught nothing but air. He sighed, helpless, and called after her, “Take a right and go straight. It’s at the end of the hall.”

But then he seemed to remember something and quickly strode after her.

Emmy pushed open the door and immediately froze.

A row of glaringly bright urinals lined the wall.

There wasn’t a women’s restroom at all.

Mortified, she swept one quick look around and darted into the last stall like she was making a getaway.

James waited outside, silent.

A moment later, Emmy emerged, still flushed and looking awkward.

“Can I… get my safe back now?”

“Yeah.” James answered without missing a beat and turned toward the dorms.

Emmy hurried after him, glancing around and suddenly realizing the whole fire station was deserted. Had everyone gone out on a call while she was out cold?

She was still lost in thought when James stopped suddenly in front of her.

She didn’t see it coming and ran right into his solid back with a thud, her nose taking the brunt of it.

“Ow…” Emmy clutched her nose, eyes stinging with tears from the pain.
